If you’re on BeautyTok (aka the beauty side of TikTok), you’ve probably come across dermaplaning and its skin-smoothing magic in action. Whether you’re curious to try it out or unsure about the hype, it’s worth knowing the basics. Simply put, “dermaplaning is an effective way to exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) from the face using a dermaplane tool, which is essentially a razor specifically designed for the face,” says Helen Sung, Head of Global Product Development and Research at Flamingo. “This technique helps improve skin texture and tone, making it feel smoother and look more radiant.”

Beyond smoother skin, dermaplaning can also help products absorb better and create the perfect base for makeup. “With the removal of dead skin cells, skin-care products can penetrate the skin more effectively,” Sung adds. While we tend to be a bit cautious about claims like this before consulting with a medical provider, we checked in with board-certified dermatologist Kristina Collins, MD, who confirmed it to be true. She told PS that it does, indeed, help products “reach the epidermis more easily,” and thus, maximizes the impact of your skin-care regimen.

As for how to dermaplane? Sung recommends starting with a good cleanse to prep your skin. Then, “hold skin taut, similar to when using wax strips,” she advises. “Use one hand to gently hold the skin taut while using the dermaplaning tool with the other. This reduces the chance of nicks and ensures smoother strokes. Use short, gentle strokes and glide the tool downward at a 45-degree angle.” Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as that can cause irritation or cuts, and take extra care around delicate areas like the nose and mouth. Afterward, follow with “a hydrating serum or moisturizer to soothe and nourish the skin,” and don’t forget to finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, because dermaplaning makes you more sensitive to the sun.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up the nine best dermaplaning tools to consider adding to your skin-care regimen, including everything from disposable and refillable options to value packs and high-tech options.
