LONDON — Chanel is strengthening its link to cinema by partnering up with acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda with a new program called “Chanel & Cinema — Tokyo Lights.”
The director of “Shoplifters,” which won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, will host a series of talks on Nov. 27 and 28 at the Okuma auditorium at Waseda University for aspiring filmmakers.
Kore-eda will lead the program with special appearances from Chanel ambassador Tilda Swinton, director Miwa Nishikawa and other friends of the brand.
The workshop will show young filmmakers the ins and outs of the entertainment industry and it will give them an opportunity to participate in a short film competition, which will be revealed during the masterclasses.

Chanel will sponsor the three selected films and will showcase them in Tokyo and Paris.
In March, the brand opened its show at Paris Fashion Week with a tribute to a classic of French cinema, tapping Brad Pitt and Penélope Cruz to reenact cult scenes from Claude Lelouch’s 1966 movie “Un homme et une femme” (“A Man and a Woman”).
The Hollywood stars smoulder in the black-and-white footage, reenacting the roles originally played by Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant against the backdrop of the film’s iconic soundtrack by Francis Lai.
The original movie won several awards, including the Grand Prix at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival and two Academy Awards, for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
