Heidi Klum Returns to ‘Project Runway’: Here’s Where All the Winners Are Now

Pennsylvania-based designer Jay McCarroll topped the competition in “Project Runway’s” Emmy-nominated debut season — interestingly without winning a single challenge. McCarroll was awarded $100,000, a career mentorship from Banana Republic and a spot in the 2005 New York Fashion Week.

He ultimately turned down the grand prize after discovering a contractual clause stipulating that the “Project Runway” production company would own a 10 percent stake in all of his future professional projects.

Following his stint on the reality show, McCarroll took fans behind the scenes of his journey to find his footing in fashion via a one-hour documentary, “Project Jay,” which aired on Bravo in February 2006. He unveiled his first collection, titled Transport, at NYFW in 2006, and four years later he returned to reality TV to compete in VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club.

Since then, he has kept a low profile. Most recently, he worked for the wardrobe department of the 2021 HBO Max limited series “Mare of Easttown.”

Chloe Dao, a Laos-born designer based in Houston, Texas, wowed the judges with her modern, feminine take on women’s wear. Her final collection featured a jewel-tone color palette, voluminous sleeves and removable shrugs.

Like her predecessor McCarroll, Dao won $100,000, a mentorship from Banana Republic and a place in New York Fashion Week. After her big win, she returned to Houston and continued growing her brand and online boutique, which offers everything from casual and dressy clothing to handbags and jewelry.

She debuted a 13-piece collection on QVC in 2007 and partnered with Nuo Tech in the following year on a line of mobile technology and travel accessories.

In 2013, Dao was tapped as a judge for “Project Runway Vietnam,” which was canceled after three seasons.

After a brief music career in the 1990s as a member of the band Lifter, Jeffrey Sebelia found his way into fashion. He launched his label Cosa Nostra, and eventually garnered a roster of celebrity clients including Dave Navarro, Gwen Stefani, Tommy Lee and Marilyn Manson.

He won Season Three of “Project Runway,” nabbing a grand prize that included $100,000 from Tresemmé, a 2007 Saturn Sky Roadster, a year’s representation by Designer’s Management Agency and a 15-page fashion spread in Elle magazine. But his appearance on the reality series came with some controversy, as he was portrayed as a villain for his explicit language and for making fellow contestant Angela Keslar’s mother cry during a client challenge.

After his win, Sebelia faced some rocky years. He was hired to design a live-action “Bratz” film but was promptly fired after calling the characters “slutty” in an interview. In 2009, he was forced to shut down Cosa Nostra. He went on to design for the brand Fluxus and later teamed up with a friend to launch a kids’ clothing collection called La Miniatura.

In 2017, Sebelia returned for the third season of “Project Runway All Stars,” coming in seventh place out of 11 contestants.

Widely considered “Project Runway’s” biggest success story, Christian Siriano also remains the show’s youngest winner. He was 21 years old when he competed in Season Four and won the grand prize of $100,000 from Tresemmé, a 2008 Saturn Astra, an opportunity to sell his collection on Bluefly.com and an editorial feature in Elle.

After his TV stint, Siriano launched his eponymous label to great fanfare and did a series of collaborations with major brands including Puma, Payless ShoeSource, Victoria’s Secret, Disney and Starbucks.

By 2012, Siriano had established himself as a go-to for celebrities looking for show-stopping red carpet looks. His most iconic style moments include Billy Porter’s tuxedo gown for the 2020 Oscars and Janelle Monáe’s Picasso-inspired trompe-l’oeil look for the 2019 Met Gala.

His other celebrity clients include Rihanna, Alicia Silverstone, Michelle Obama, Sia and Christina Applegate.

Siriano returned to his “Project Runway” roots in 2019, taking on Tim Gunn’s former role as mentor for four seasons so far.

Leanne Marshall surprised viewers by climbing from the bottom two in the second episode to clinch the win in Season Five against strong competitors Korto Momolu and Kenley Collins. Her final runway collection featured wave-inspired looks with soft, feminine curves and a palette of turquoise, ivory and tan shades.

Marshall created an eco-friendly collection for Bluefly.com as part of her prize package, and also custom designed a maternity dress for “Project Runway” host Heidi Klum, who was pregnant with her daughter Lou at the time.

Eventually, Marshall found her niche in the bridal category, launching her namesake wedding dress collection in 2011. In 2022, however, she announced via a message on her website that she was exiting the bridal market because it felt like “a misfit” for her due to its “outdated traditions” and “lack of sustainability.”

In a season notably featuring three women finalists, Irina Shabayeva — who is from the country of Georgia — remained a front-runner throughout her season leading up to the finale, when she wowed the judges with a female warrior-inspired collection.

Following her big win, Shabayeva snagged several celebrity clients including Carrie Underwood, who wore one of the designer’s ombré gowns on the cover of her 2012 album “Blown Away.” She also dressed Selena Gomez for the 2011 People’s Choice Awards and Sarah Michelle Gellar for the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Shabayeva returned to the “Project Runway” franchise in 2013 to compete in the third All Stars season, followed by an appearance in Season Seven of the spinoff in 2019. She now serves as creative director for her label, Irina Shabayeva Couture, as well as for women’s brand Maison MJZ.

Seth Aaron Henderson made history as the first designer to become a two-time “Project Runway” winner, besting the competition in both Season Seven of the original show and Season Three of the All Stars spinoff. He also returned to compete in Season Seven of All Stars.

The Los Angeles-based designer currently runs his own brand, SethAaron, designing ready-to-wear pieces, accessories, bags and even pet fashions. He also frequently teams up with L.A. Roxx to create custom looks for music artists and other stars including Megan Thee Stallion, T-Pain and Jennifer Hudson.

Gretchen Jones narrowly beat out fan-favorite Mondo Guerra to win Season Eight in a finale episode memorable for its untypically long judging process. Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, who cast their votes in favor of Jones, got into a heated debate with host Heidi Klum and guest judge Jessica Simpson, who believed the stronger collection was Mondo’s. Tim Gunn later criticized the decision to crown Jones the winner.

After her appearance on the show, Jones pursued a career in women’s wear, including a stint as fashion director for Pendleton Woolen Mills. She earned an MBA in fashion from the London College of Fashion in 2018, and then launched her own company, Weird Specialty.

She provides strategic business consulting services to clients including Converse, 19th & Park, Jenny Pennywood, Core Fabrics and Tina Wells.

Anya Ayoung Chee is one of “Project Runway’s” most unlikely winners. The former Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago had only four months of sewing experience when she joined the show in 2011. Yet she managed to place in the top three in most of the season’s challenges and won it all with her vibrant finale collection.

She earned $100,000 in seed money from L’Oréal Paris, a $50,000 technology suite by HP and Intel, a spread in Marie Claire and a retail partnership with Piper Lime. She also won an additional $10,000 after being voted the season’s fan-favorite contestant in a social media contest.

Ayoung Chee later appeared as a mentor in Tim Gunn’s spinoff series “Under the Gunn,” and competed in Season Seven of “All Stars” (coming in 10th place).

These days, the designer runs her own online clothing business, selling brightly colored dresses and resort wear.

Dmitry Sholokhov is another double winner, besting his competitors on both Season 10 of “Project Runway” and Season Four of “All Stars”. The Belarus-born designer, known for using a mostly black color palette, worked for several fashion companies including The Jones Group before trying out for the show.

After his wins, Sholokhov focused on building his own eponymous label while also working as an instructor at his alma mater, the Parsons School of Design.

In 2019, he returned to “All Stars” to compete in Season Seven and came in second place behind winner Michelle Lesniak. That same year, he was named Fashion Designer of the Year at the Metropolitan Fashion Awards in Los Angeles.

In “Project Runway’s” inaugural “teams” edition, wine industry transplant Michelle Lesniak struggled early in the season, nearly getting cut from the show. But she persevered — and despite having a lack of formal training like her competitors — was named champion.

She stood out by tapping into her background in printmaking, using techniques such as silk screening and wood blocking to create original textiles for her designs.

Following her winning season, Lesniak returned home to Portland to continue to design under her own brand, though she has since shuttered her website. She also completed on “All Stars” Season Four and returned to the spinoff series in 2019 for Season Seven. She beat out 13 competitors — including seven winners of foreign editions of “Project Runway” — to win the title.

After wowing the judges in Season 12 with her bold geometric prints and retro silhouettes, Dom Streater went on to also win Season 5 of “All Stars.”

She presented her first collection at New York Fashion Week in 2014, and in the decade since, she’s designed knitwear and sweaters for Urban Outfitters in Philadelphia and launched her own freelance design studio. Her clients include Otterbox, Belk and Velodyne.

New Zealand-born designer Sean Kelly emerged as the victor in Season 13 by impressing the judges challenge after challenge. For the memorable “rainway” challenge — which tasked the competitors with creating a look that was both avant-garde and waterproof — he presented a white dress that bloomed with color under the rain.

After his “Project Runway” stint, Kelly went on to specialize in men’s swimwear with his brand Hercules New York. He returned to the reality TV franchise in 2019 to compete in Season 7 of “All Stars,” coming in seventh place.

With her focus on plus-size fashions and an empowering body-positivity message, Ashley Nell Tipton blazed a trail — and inspired the show to be more inclusive in the seasons that followed.

Her Season 14 win led to a lot of exciting opportunities, including a contract with JCPenney to design and be the face of the retailer’s plus-size boutique. She also created plus-size patterns for Simplicity and a jewelry collection for K&M Accessories.

In 2017, Tipton launched her own line of clothing, eyewear and jewelry. Her other ventures include design consulting and teaching online and in-person sewing classes for teens and adults.

Fresh out of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Erin Robertson jumped into the competition on “Project Runway’s” 15th season. She quickly made her mark with her colorful, quirky designs featuring everything from banana prints to oversized embellishments.

After her reality show appearance, Robertson worked on various creative endeavors and launched her own business, An_Erin, selling handmade “fashion art,” including her popular blanket coats.

Last year, however, she announced that she was taking a break from sewing and design to focus on a sporty new venture, Pickle Pop, an indoor pickleball venue in Santa Monica that also serves food and stocks clothing and paddles.

In Season 16, Kentaro Kameyama not only showed off his fashion design skills but his musical talents. The Japanese-born designer is also a classical pianist who composed original music for his finale collection, which featured his signature minimalist aesthetic and bold new silhouettes.

During Tim Gunn’s home visit ahead of the runway shows, Kameyama memorably served up what would become an iconic “Project Runway” scene. He played Gunn a piece on the piano, and when the show’s mentor asked what inspired it, Kameyama inexplicably replied: “Well, I found a dead cat on the street. So, after I buried the cat, I put my ear into the ground, and this is the kind of sound I heard.”

After “Project Runway,” Kameyama launched his eponymous brand, and in recent years he’s pivoted to making more casual, sporty pieces. He currently serves as fashion design chair at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California.

Jhoan “Sebastian” Grey was a fan favorite in Season 17, both for his endearing personality and his standout talent.

After winning the competition, the Colombia native went on to unveil his debut collection at New York Fashion Week in 2020. His pieces showcased a unique technique that melded his background working in his family’s leather business with the artisanal heritage of Colombia to create a knitting leather that allowed him to construct garments in a single piece.

In February 2024, Grey debuted a collection with HSN called Grey by Jhoan Sebastian Grey, featuring trend-forward women’s separates such as jacquard sweater jackets and satin cargo pants.

A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Geoffrey Mac came to “Project Runway” in 2020 with extensive industry experience. Thanks to his avant-garde latex designs, he steadily built a celebrity clientele that included Lady Gaga, Madonna, Björk and Britney Spears, who all wore custom looks for their music tours.

Mac’s edgy designs were also featured in a Season 16 episode of “America’s Next Top Model.”

After he won Season 18 of “Project Runway,” beating out some strong competitors, Mac focused on growing his own label — offering ready-to-wear versions of his latex fashions — as well as doing custom commissions and working on collaborations.

After competing on the first season of “Project Runway Latin America” in 2010, Shantall Lacayo starred in the American edition of the series in 2021. The Nicaraguan designer became the first Latin American woman to win the show with her impressive technical expertise and modern, versatile looks.

Over the past several years, Lacayo has continued to grow her women’s wear label, Shantall, and partnered with other brands and creators for limited-edition collaborations.

Baltimore-born designer Bishme Cromartie competed in “Project Runway” Season 17 and, just a few years later, he came back for another shot at the big prize in the main show’s new all-stars edition. In addition to consistently turning out winning or high-scoring designs across the challenges, Cromartie took viewers on an emotional journey as he grieved the recent death of his sister Chimere from cancer.

Since his win, he has dressed a number of celebrities, including Lizzo, Andra Day, Niecy Nash and Karrueche Tran, while building his eponymous brand.

The spinoff series “Project Runway All Stars”, which debuted its first season in 2012, brought back previous contestants for another shot at victory. Led by host Alyssa Milano and main judges Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman, the show follows a familiar format as the original series, putting the designers through a series of challenges before culminating in final runway collections.

After a second-place finish in “Project Runway” Season Eight, Mondo Guerra won the inaugural season of All Stars. He won four of the 10 design challenges leading up to the finale, which saw him presenting a mini collection to guest judges Tommy Hilfiger and Ken Downing.

Seth Aaron Henderson notched his second “Project Runway” win in Season Three of “All Stars” after unveiling his finale collection at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He kept a low profile throughout the season, winning just one challenge, but the judges ultimately crowned him champion over fellow finalists Korto Momolu and Elena Slivnyak.

On “All Stars” Season Four, Dmitry Sholokhov clinched his second “Project Runway” win. After a slow start, he found his groove and consistently earned high scores from the judges before presenting his finale collection, featuring eight pieces inspired by the four seasons.

“Project Runway” Season Seven winner Anthony Williams returned for All Stars’ sixth season, taking on 16 competitors — eight of whom had already competed in a previous “All Stars” edition. Despite being in the bottom for three of the last five challenges, he pulled off the win in the finale episode.

The seventh season of All Stars had a “champions” theme and featured 14 winning designers, seven from “Project Runway’s” American edition and seven from foreign versions of the show. Michelle Lesniak emerged as the victor.

“Project Runway Junior” premiered in 2015 and ran for two seasons. Co-hosted by Tim Gunn and Hannah Jeter, the kids’ spinoff saw 12 teen designers compete in both solo and team challenges, judged by Christian Siriano, Kelly Osbourne and Aya Kanai. The winner’s prize package included a full scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, a complete home sewing and crafting studio from Brother, a feature in Seventeen magazine, a VisionWorks shopping spree and $25,000.

In the first of two seasons of “Project Runway Junior, “Toledo, Ohio-based contestant Maya Ramirez — who was 14 years old at the time — beat out 11 other teen designers. After her win, Ramirez won Duck Brand’s “Stuck at Prom” contest, earning her a $10,000 scholarship, which she planned to put toward her studies at Parsons Paris.

Chelsea Ma won Season Two of “Project Runway Junior” at the age of 15. She went on to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, and earn a bachelor’s degree from the London College of Fashion. Ma is currently working as a UX/UI designer for health tech brand Oura.
