Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I love finding new information on TikTok. Even though most of the time I say something like, “I read this article that said,” the reality is, I probably just watched a video about it on TikTok. However, the app’s game can’t be contested. I’ve found some of my favorite beauty hacks on the platform, especially when it comes to hair and makeup.
I’ve learned how to fake a full ponytail, how to use a claw-clip with a hat, and even how to make my lips look fuller with just two products.
Plus, it’s one of the best places to follow actual celebrities and see them break down their full beauty routines. What more could a person want? Most of the time, the hacks are *chef’s kiss*, but I’ve come across a handful of duds.
Recently, I stumbled across a hack that I honestly didn’t believe worked, even though I was seeing it with my own two eyes. In TikTok user and hairstylist Matthew Newman‘s video, he showcased how to use a duck clip and a multi-styler tool to get easy pin curls.
Essentially, instead of drying the hair, letting it out of the dryer, and then using your fingers to manually roll it into a curl secured with a duck clip, Newman used a multi-styler curler attachment and then just stuck the duck clip directly through the curl. It probably sounds a little complicated, but Newman made it look easy. However, I wasn’t convinced I could replicate it.
I started out by washing my hair, and then prepping it with the Wella Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue ($75). (I don’t do my hair without this stuff.) From there, I rough-dried it using my beloved Dyson Airwrap ($649). Once my hair was about 85 percent dry, I divided my hair into sections and switched over to the curling attachments.
I curled a one-inch section away from my face using the attachment, but instead of letting it out when I was done, I slipped a duck clip directly through the curl and then slipped the Dyson off my hair. Shockingly, it worked. The duck clip went in easily, the Dyson slipped out with a single snag, and the clip and curl were held in place. Talk about a win.
From there, I just repeated the same steps with each section until I finished my entire head, and then I let it sit and cool for about fifteen minutes. When I took everything out, I had so much bounce and volume in my hair, I couldn’t believe it. I have very fine hair, but trust me, after using this hack, you really couldn’t tell – it looked fuller than ever.
The best part? My curls and volume lasted all night without any added product to keep everything in place. When it comes to marking this hack as a dud or a stud, it’s firmly falling in the latter category. I will absolutely be using this hack any time I want to fake fuller hair, add volume, or get curls that last.
