Kim Kardashian dipped into the Thierry Mugler archive for her family’s annual Christmas Eve party on Wednesday night, paying homage to the storied designer and his muse, Somali supermodel Iman. In a carousel of images shared on Instagram, the 45-year-old Skims founder was seen dressed in a metallic strapless gown from the winter 1986 collection.
The silver garment featured corset stitching from the chest to the hips, with black tinsel separating the top of the gown from the skirt. That same tinsel also lined the bottom trim and colored each breast. On the runway, Iman was seen wearing a deconstructed version of Kardashian’s dress, comprising a silver skirt, bandeau and a matching fur wrap coat. Indeed, the reality star opted to cover her stomach, letting only her shoulders and arms go bare. She did, however, accentuate the Gothic design with silver cuffs on each wrist.

Her hair was also “Kim-coded” — a modest half-up, half-down style with a braided crown imagined by artist Dimitris Giannetos. Iman’s runway hair had the same components but resembled a hood of hair with long extensions and extra-large icicle earrings that reached from the top of her BumpIt to her shoulders. Kardashian swapped the ornate accessory for teardrop diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.
Artist Rokael Lizama created Kardashian’s frosty facial aesthetic, using baby pink blush to flush her cheeks and a nude hue to dress her lips. This was a far cry from Iman’s makeup, which included her signature smoky eye, burgundy gloss, and razor-thin brows.
From the start of her career in 1975, Iman has been praised for her ability to exemplify the complementary yet intricate relationship between fashion and beauty, both on and off the runway. There wasn’t a hair or makeup combination she was afraid of. Most often, she was seen with protruding, sculptural hair, abstract eye shadow, and vibrant lip colors, all in line with her aesthetic at the Mugler 1986 show.
Kardashian wasn’t the only sister who revived a fashion relic; Kylie Jenner plucked a black crêpe strapless dress with white ponyhair stripes from the John Galliano 1995 archive. The 28-year-old cranked her older sister’s braided crown up a notch, adding suspended buns in the back of her head.
