Working alongside her longtime stylist Genesis Webb, Chappell Roan sported a referential look inspired by a fan-favorite Luc Besson film for her performance at Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields music festival on Aug. 29 in Irvine, Calif.
Webb and Roan collaborated on creating a version of the stewardess looks from the 1997 film “The Fifth Element.” These iconic costumes appear in the film for only a short time, seen only in the Fhloston Paradise boarding scenes.
Despite this, they’ve stuck in the minds of audiences today, influencing fashion choices like Roan’s. The uniforms were originally sky blue and designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and were accompanied by pillbox-esque hats. Roan’s look was a deep purple hue, but still maintained that futuristic flair.

“The Subway” singer’s ensemble consisted of a cropped bra top that was bolero-like. The custom piece featured long sleeves and a collared neckline that transitioned into a large cut-out on the bodice and a structural bra portion. The skirt was mini and featured a folded-over waist with accents that mirrored the collar detailing of her top. While her look wasn’t an exact replica of those seen in Besson’s film, it was pretty close.
Partnered with her futuristic ensemble fit for the silver screen, the musician wore coordinating purple knee-high boots made of glistening purple leather. The boots were skin-tight and featured zip-up closures on the side that transitioned into squared-off toes and short block heels. In another nod to the stewardesses from the film, Roan wore a bob wig in her signature ginger shade.
Daisy Chain Fields is a music festival started by Rodrigo set to take place today, Aug. 29, in Irvine, Calif. The lineup consists of all-female acts, including Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Doechii, and The Breeders, among others. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales went to women-centered non-profits. Thanks to her ticket sales, Rodrigo was able to raise over $20 million.
