For Pharrell Williams’ Louis Vuitton pre-fall men’s show in Hong Kong, which referenced Hawaiian surfer nonchalance, makeup artist Pat McGrath created a sun-kissed bronzy beauty look that evoked summer heat and humidity, which agrees with Hong Kong’s subtropical climate.

Talking exclusively with WWD ahead of the show, McGrath revealed that her trick is to prep the skin with Pat McGrath Labs’ Divine Skin 001: Rose the Essence to plump and hydrate the skin, then add a layer of Williams’ Humanrace Humidifying Face cream “to add an additional surge of moisture.”

To achieve the poreless, bronzy glow, McGrath used products from her Skin Fetish line, including the primer, concealer, bronzer and blush to seduce and highlight the cheeks and cheekbones, then finishing it off with a setting powder around the nose and forehead to reduce shine.

“It’s menswear, so we don’t put much makeup on the boys. But for some girls, we’ve added a touch of shine to the lids with the balm end of the Skin Fetish highlighter and balm duo,” added McGrath.

“The bronze gives the models a little bit extra of that healthy vibe, but at the same time, it’s kept very natural, almost like you can’t see it, so it’s very soft, very subliminal,” explained McGrath.

“It’s a tiny step up from the no-makeup look, because it’s more about the skin and how to make skin look really beautiful and natural,” McGrath added.

The runway look echoed the “Latte makeup” trend populating TikTok feeds, which McGrath said reminded her of over-the-top 1990s fashion campaign looks “where we made all the girls, such as Amber Valletta, super bronze,” said McGrath. “It’s really fun to see that come back,” she added.

Talking about her experience working with Williams, which started during his Louis Vuitton menswear debut earlier this year, McGrath characterized the work dynamic as “creative and fun.” “Pharrell and I have known each other for years,” enthused McGrath.

McGrath, who founded her luxury makeup brand in 2015 and recently launched at Ulta Beauty, said that she has no plans to venture into skin care, but she “truly admires and supports the philosophy of Humanrace as a brand that celebrates everyone.”
