Adam Driver is once again playing the scion at the center of a very famous Italian family, whose name has become synonymous with a luxury brand. No, it’s not a “House of Gucci” sequel. Driver is transforming into Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s upcoming movie titled simply “Ferrari.”
Viewers got their first look at Driver on set on Oct. 7, 2022, before the trailer finally arrived one year later. The intense film preview arrived on Oct. 18, showing Driver’s Enzo in a race for his life as he fights to save his failing company.
“Ferrari” is set in 1957 when Enzo, a former race-car driver, and his wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz), are in a moment of crisis. The company they started, Ferrari, is on the edge of bankruptcy, and their marriage is struggling following the loss of their son, Dino. Enzo, who started Ferrari solely as a racing business before it began selling cars, decides to take a big swing in the 1957 Mille Miglia race. The famed race is close to a thousand miles long and marks a round trip between Rome and Brescia.
Nowadays, Ferrari continues to sell cars and, of course, run a racing business. The team competes competitively in Formula 1, though they haven’t won a title since the mid-2000s. As interest in the sport has grown, quite a few F1-related projects have been greenlit in recent years. In addition to “Ferrari,” Netflix has the “Drive to Survive” reality series, which follows current drivers, and Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton – arguably the most successful F1 driver of all time – are working on a film about the sport for Apple. There was also 2019’s “Ford v. Ferrari,” which was about Ford’s quest to beat Ferrari in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
Ahead, find out what we know about “Ferrari.”
