After delivering the 28th iteration of its Gel-Nimbus series in January, Japanese sportswear company Asics is back with yet another milestone installment of one of its long-running franchises, the Gel-Cumulus 28.
Set to be released soon in numerous men’s and women’s colorways, the Asics Gel-Cumulus 28 is the latest evolution of the brand’s lightweight, everyday neutral running shoe.

Carrying on the legacy of the first Gel-Cumulus model from 1999, the latest iteration of the model upgrades the combination of FF Blast Plus from the Gel-Cumulus 27 with a new FF Blast Max foam setup. Asics touts FF Blast Max as one of its most energetic cushioning technologies and says it’s intended to provide “cloud-like landings” and responsive toe-offs.
Durability is enhanced with a new AHAR(Asics High Abrasion Rubber) Lo rubber in the heel, which Asics says offers both improved traction and longer-lasting properties.
Asics also managed to make the Gel-Cumulus 28 even lighter than its predecessor, cutting the weight from 265 grams (9.3 ounces) to 259 grams (9.1 ounces) based on men’s size 9 pairs.
However, the brand didn’t set out to reinvent the Gel-Cumulus completely, and instead kept many of the familiar traits that have made the franchise a success. Both the new Gel-Cumulus 28 and its Gel-Cumulus 27 predecessor boast 8 mm drop heights, use the brand’s PureGel technology in the heel and feature Fluidride outsoles which are intended to provide traction while also promoting smooth transitions.
Beyond its performance offerings, Asics has built buzz with its Sportstyle offerings ranging from Kiko Kostadinov’s avant-garde designs to the brand’s Gel-Kinetic SP derby-sneaker mash-up.
The Asics Gel-Cumulus 28 will be released at the end of the month on Feb. 28 for $145 in both men’s and women’s sizing from asics.com and select Asics retailers. Eight men’s launch styles will be released alongside nine women’s colorways.
