Gone are the days where safe and predictable looks would suffice at the BAFTA Awards. On Sunday in London, the British awards show delivered fashion-packed red carpet moments full of directional trends and couture messages.
The incredible roster of homegrown talent, including Dua Lipa, Carrey Mulligan, Florence Pugh and Vivian Oparah, went toe-to-toe with international imports with high-fashion pedigrees, including Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper, Ayo Edibiri and Taylor Russell.
Here are some the key trends that the entertainment community delivered at the British capital tonight:
Red
In a sea of black gowns, an assortment of red stood out, bringing power and drama to the carpet. The best example was Dua Lipa in a Valentino halterneck with a dramatic cape with burgundy-colored hair to match.
Surprise Orange
Orange was the least expected shade on the BAFTAs red carpet, where Ayo Edebiri delivered probably the best look of the whole night, with a peachy 1920s-inspired Bottega Veneta gown paired with a white feather boa. It was, at once, timeless and modern.
Waist Details
Canadian actress Taylor Russell gave us another memorable look from British designer Jonathan Anderson for Loewe, who created this white gown with cutouts revealing her back and waist. Complete with feather embellishments, she brought to mind a real-life Swan. Florence Pugh, in a black Harris Reed gown with a metallic bustier, was another standout waist-forward moment.
Plunging Necklines
The plunging neckline was the detail of the night when it came to seduction on the BAFTAs carpet. Hats off to Phoebe Dynevor for her homage to old-Hollywood glamour in white satin with one of the lowest cuts the night.
Menswear/Top Coat
The lads have been giving the ladies a run for their money on the red carpet recently, and BAFTAs were no different. The evening top coat has become a go-to, but Bradley Cooper took it a step further by adding a military spin with a ’70s-flavored pant.
Metallics
In line with the most recent haute couture shows, metallics were key trends. Sheila Atim lit up the night in this silver metallic Gucci gown with a short train that positioned her as one of the best dressed.
