Designers and celebrities aren’t the only trendsetters — movies and television shows have generated many a fashion fad: just take it from this year’s Golden Globe nominees.

After breaking box office records, “Barbie” leads the list with 10 nominations, meanwhile hit dramas such as “Succession” and “The Crown” swept several television categories with nine and four nods each, respectively. Some of the biggest trends on screen have also translated to the real world, with Barbiecore leaving its mark on fashion and beauty and quiet luxury leading those of all classes to channel the Roy family’s penchant for minimalist dressing.

Ahead, WWD breaks down the Golden Globe-worthy inspirations behind some of this year’s biggest fashion moments.

After Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were first spotted filming “Barbie” in Los Angeles, Barbiecore took the internet (and naturally, the fashion world) by storm for an entire year before it hit theaters. The all-pink aesthetic, inspired by Mattel’s beloved doll, emphasizes bold femininity. Sky-high platforms, heart-shaped purses and matching sets are all peak Barbiecore; The trend could even be spotted on the runways of Valentino, Chanel and Versace.

TikTok and Google searches for all things Barbiecore spiked in 2022 and 2023, with several brands including Zara, Crocs and Nyx launching Barbie-themed collaborations pegged to the film’s release. During the “Barbie” press tour, Robbie took the trend to new heights by channeling several of the doll’s iconic looks, all curated by stylist Andrew Mukamal.

“Barbie” is one of this year’s top Golden Globe nominees. The film received a total of 10 nods including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director (Motion Picture) for Greta Gerwig and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Robbie.

“Succession”

“Succession” may have taken its final bow this year, but trends set by its devious cast of characters are proving timeless. Quiet luxury, also known as stealth wealth, replaces ostentatious displays with subtle high-end staples, eschewing gaudy accents and logo prints sometimes associated with the wealthy.

The wardrobes of Shiv, Logan and the rest of the Roy brood put this minimalist trend back on the map after it had a major moment in the ’90s. Google searches for “quiet luxury,” “stealth wealth” and “old money style” increased following the HBO drama’s season four premiere. It was also replicated by labels like Fendi, Christian Dior and Armani Privè in 2023.

“Succession” is up for nine Golden Globes including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for Sarah Snook.

“The Crown”

The late Princess of Wales has been a consistent source of sartorial inspiration, so it’s no surprise that Diana’s fashions saw a major resurgence following Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal in “The Crown.”

Sportswear retailer Mitchell & Ness recreated a Philadelphia Eagles jacket worn by Diana throughout the ’80s and ’90s. The already sold-out bomber, priced at $400, is now reselling for double the original cost. A version of the jacket signed by Kylie Kelce, wife of Eagles center Jason Kelce, even fetched $100,000 at auction in November.

Promotional images for the final season of “The Crown” depicted Debicki in a teal once-piece swimsuit reminiscent of one Diana wore in 1997. According to Google, searches for “one-piece swimsuit” jumped in the weeks following the show’s premiere. Meanwhile, “blue swimsuit” searches saw a nearly tenfold increase in traffic.

“The Crown” scored four Golden Globe nominations including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress (Television) for Debicki.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”

Leave it to Taylor Swift to make friendship bracelets cool again. The trend references a lyric from one of her songs, “You’re on Your Own, Kid.”

Swift’s worldwide “Eras Tour” had fans getting crafty, stringing together beaded bracelets, which were customarily traded between “Swifties” at shows. This concert tradition extended to theaters once “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” made its silver screen debut. The documentary is nominated in one of the Golden Globes’ newest categories, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

“The Color Purple”

The film’s title says it all: “The Color Purple” reboot, out this Christmas, has already spawned a craze for violet shades thanks to producer Oprah Winfrey. “OK, y’all have seen the trailer, and I’m giving you six months to get your outfit together for opening day,” Winfrey said in an Instagram video earlier this year. “All things purple.”

Several designers including Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra and LaQuan Smith partook in the purple trend this year, sending lilac, lavender and mauve hues down the runway. The trend has also taken off on the red carpet, with several stars following Winfrey’s directive at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles.

“The Color Purple” is up for two Golden Globes, with Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Supporting Actress (Motion Picture), respectively.

“Air”

“Air” may not have replicated the box office success of 2023 blockbusters like “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer,” but it was lauded by critics for its portrayal of Nike’s rise after the release of the Air Jordan sneaker.

The high-top shoes cultivated a following long before the release of “Air,” but an increase in Jordan sales this year could be partially correlated to Ben Affleck’s and Matt Damon’s latest collaboration. Nike released its year-end fiscal stats in September, revealing that Air Jordans were responsible for 12.9 percent of the brand’s sales in 2023: that’s a total of more than $6.5 billion in revenue.

“Air” is in the running for two Golden Globes, those being Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Damon.
