Suede, step aside: Fall 2026’s hottest handbag material is shaping up to be calf hair, and the warning signs were there all along.
Society’s most stylish dressers — based in fashion capitals from Berlin to Amsterdam to Paris — have been cosigning this fabric for months now, while putting their own unique spins on calf hair–clad bags with prints like cow, zebra, and the darling doe.
How Are Calf Hair Bags Made?
A highly tactile option, calf hair (sometimes referred to as pony hair leather) is sourced from the hair side of an animal’s hide and bleached during production to accommodate for various brands’ designs. Traditional leather, on the other hand, is made from the non-hair side of the hide, resulting in a smoother and arguably less intricate texture. Cows are the most common animal that’s used for calf hair, though goats also occasionally come into the picture.
Calf Hair Trends on the Runways
For a few years now, designer labels such as Michael Kors, Alaïa, and Tory Burch have been busy embracing calf hair clothing, accessories, and even footwear on their runways — in the form of trench coats, ballet flats, statement handbags, and beyond.
Shoes and bags, indeed, show the most promise for innovation when it comes to the usage of this material. Spring 2026 slingback pumps from Chanel, Ugg’s recent Western Collection, and a “Deer Print” reinterpretation of Adidas’ iconic Samba silhouette have all successfully demonstrated calf hair’s potential, as well as its universally flattering effect.
On the handbag front, labels from Khaite to Sézane have been saying “yes” to this striking finish in their fresh releases, but we have our gaze set particularly on Coach‘s just-launched slew of calf hair purses (with key styles already being sold out, mere weeks after their arrival).
Unveiled quite covertly, the currently in-stock duo of bags lives on the Coach Outlet side of Coach’s website and is composed of the famous Nolita 19 bag and the double-buckled Ashton, with the feminine Abbie and the subtly crescent-shaped Teri witnessing dreaded “out of stock” messaging as we speak.
It’s a tight edit, but these handbags are the dictionary definition of versatile: allowing shoppers to easily incorporate the selections into daytime and nighttime looks alike. It’s important to mention that, at Coach, the calf hair bags are swathed in a dark leopard print — tapping into a mainstay pattern that has influenced the sartorial sphere so thoroughly, it’s now thought of as a full-fledged neutral.
STAPLE STYLE
Coach Nolita 19 Bag in Haircalf With Leopard Print
Coach’s zip-top Nolita boasts all the attributes of an ideal bag. It’s compact (grab the essentials only, then head out the door!), has a 6.25-inch handle drop that layers well over all manner of outerwear, and can be hauled like a clutch if your outfit calls for it.
The Nolita’s recycled polyester lining promises to treat said essentials with respect, too, just as two internal credit card slots encourage staying organized on your busiest days. As for the contrast created by that spotted calf hair and Coach’s gilded hardware? We have no notes.
VINTAGE-INSPIRED BEAUTY
Coach Ashton Bag in Haircalf With Leopard Print
Appearing last year, the Ashton Bag has since then been subject to many an update, but this one just might be its best to date. Also coming to you with a fully detachable handle that can be swapped for a longer strap, the chic slinger is meant to be donned over the shoulder, crossbody-style, or in the palm of your hand (consider it a choose your own adventure).
Magnetic snap pockets on the outside provide more space for the tchotchkes you can’t live without, while eye-catching belt detailing and an accompanying hangtag dole out the drama — as if the sheer richness of the Ashton’s composition wasn’t enough.
If history is any indication, these styles will go the way of the Dodo… and soon. Coach’s under-$150, cow-printed Teri Shoulder Bag with a calf hair exterior, for instance, depleted in inventory too quick for comfort (and we won’t even talk about the tragic disappearance of the deer print–adorned, calf hair Nolita from online shelves). It’s safe to say the wild cat–evoking line is even more of a hot commodity: what with its moodier color palette for cold weather and go-with-everything appeal.
How to Style Calf Hair Bags
Stumped on how to style your new acquisitions? We recommend pairing the Ashton and Nolita with a monochromatic capsule wardrobe (think straight-leg, dark-wash denim, a tailored black blazer, an off-white tee underneath, and your glossy leather booties).
Though Coach’s Dark Leopard colorway isn’t outspoken per se, it will still shine and pop against the background of a more subdued outfit equation if given the opportunity.
Remember, though: Too many competing textures and designs lead to visual dissonance. Proceed with caution by echoing either the bag’s leopard or calf hair element in one (and only one) other accessory as part of your look du jour — be it a Coach Outlet leopard umbrella carried around on rainy autumn days or a sleek pair of calf hair gloves lined in cashmere.
What Bag Textures Are Trending This Fall?
Contrary to what we might’ve said in the article’s intro, suede bags are still showing strong traction this season, especially as they get reimagined with unexpectedly saturated shades, quirky baubles, and refreshing proportions.
Nevertheless, suede feels increasingly predictable in a handbag landscape that’s being pervaded by puffy, quilted finishes, exotic embossing, luminous silk touches, vintage-inspired beading, and, of course, calf hair — which is often written as “haircalf” on the sites of leading fashion houses like Coach.
Pony hair, crafted out of genuine cowhide, is a premium choice, not only because of its distinct aesthetic but also due to the excellence of the material’s quality. After all, it’s able to retain dyes exceptionally well, according to experts, while being resistant to moisture, flexible, and durable as compared to more fragile fabrics.
Dimensional, smooth, and an absolute delight to look at, calf hair also brings with it the benefit of longevity, meaning the Coach handbags above are guaranteed to stay in tip-top shape for years (if not decades) on end. Good thing this trend is one we envision sticking around for the long term.
