While the headlines that came out of New York Fashion Week this season were not the usual fare, there was still plenty of fashion on the runway. Designers showed their Spring/Summer 2027 collections, emphasizing minimalism, transparency, bursts of lime and marigold and warm-weather silhouettes like culotte and capri bottoms.
Denim was a constant in collections, with many looks touching on ongoing and emerging trends in the category.
Aknvas tapped into the growing demand for colored denim with mauve and lavender overdyed jeans, a peplum jacket and a ruffle mini dress alongside slouchy blue jeans and denim micro shorts. Washed gray denim emphasized the silver hardware and seams featured in Jane Wade’s collection. J. Crew collaborator Eckhaus Latta’s blue, brown and black jeans (many with twisted seams) had a rust-like color effect. Ossou also showed denim culottes with a red clay hue.
Simiarly, prints, patterns and coatings turned jeans into statement pieces. Ossou created a wood grain effect on jeans. Luar’s denim sets had a wet, reptilian look. Simkhai applied a glossy coating to otherwise classic jeans and jackets. And Lafayette 148’s interest in quilting was evident the brand’s geometric denim skirt, jeans and peplum jacket.
There was also no shortage of decorated denim. Jamie Haller embellished light blue jeans with cobalt appliques, Conner Ives applied ribbon and other trimmings to cuffed jeans and PatBo covered jeans with beadwork. Smatterings of dull hardware added a hint of glimmer to Anna Sui’s dark denim.
Other designers leaned into denim’s unique texture and constructions. Advisry showed jeans with horizontal seams and fringe, and a dress made up an upside-down jean jacket. Christian Cowan showed jeans and jackets with reversed constructions.
Relaxed and straight fits remain prominent in collections, but Jamie Haller and LaQuan Smith made a strong case for flare silhouettes, and 7 For All Mankind brought back the low-rise capri jean in a big way.
