President Joe Biden and First Lady of the U.S. Jill Biden traveled to France for the commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy on Thursday. The couple greeted and spoke with World War II veterans and were joined by the president and first lady for France.
For the occasion, Biden opted for subdued elegance. Trading out previous color motifs like sparkling sapphires and ombre hues of purple, Biden wore a dark skirt suit with an ornate pattern. The first lady continued the style choice with the selection of her accessories.
Biden chose a few sparkling elements, including a broach she wore on the lapel of her blazer. She also fashioned a delicate necklace to accentuate the look.
She wore a pair of dark heels and sheer black tights to complete the look. Biden’s blond hair was styled with soft waves to frame her face, along with makeup that complemented her natural beauty.
The first lady and the president spent time greeting and speaking with World War II veterans as part of the commemorative ceremony for D-Day, the landing and airborne operations led by allied forces during the latter years of the war on June 6, 1944.
Alongside the Bidens, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron joined the ceremony proceedings.
Prior to the Bidens overseas trip to France to mark the anniversary of D-Day, the couple hosted a White House state dinner for Kenyan President William Ruto on May 23. For the occasion, Jill Biden favored a sapphire gown courtesy of Sergio Hudson.
“I wanted to do something that was a little bolder than what she normally wears. It’s such a divisive time in politics. Sometimes fashion can give you the lift and the positive energy that you need,” Hudson told WWD in an interview regarding the ornate column gown worn by Biden.
“With the [presidential] election and everything that is going on, everything has become so negative and divisive. I just wanted a great fashion moment and to lift our spirits.”
Unlike the May state dinner, Biden’s sartorial statement for the D-Day anniversary demonstrated a recognition of the sacrifice made on that historic day; using her fashion as a poignant moment of reflection, mourning and resolve.
