The pursuit for a holy grail neutral lip liner, much like nude lipsticks, is inherently personal. Not only must it seamlessly match the color of your natural lips — a non-negotiable for those who like to draw outside the lines to enhance their pout — it should also flatter your overall skin tone and act as a chameleon base for shiny lip gloss and matte lipsticks. Glossier just cracked the code with the new Lip Line Enhancing Pencil, a budge-proof, medium-coverage definer that boasts nothing short of a “true-to-lip” finish.

On the heels of Glossier’s long-anticipated OG Balm Dotcom relaunch, the cult-favorite brand just dropped eight expertly curated nude lip liners that uniquely home in on warm, cool, rosy and brown undertones for the ideal your-lips-but-better hue. So, how did Glossier nail down a range of universally flattering shades? Well, if you’re familiar with the age-old makeup artist hack to match your neutral lip to the tone of your nipple for the perfect shade, Glossier product developers took that rule and ran with it — by conducting extensive research on women’s nipple and lip tones to inform each and every shade of Lip Line.

Beyond the range of velvety soft pink, peachy-brown, deep mauve, and cognac hues, the Lip Line formula is something to write home about, according to our editors who have been testing the shades all week ahead of the launch. Infused with fractional quartz and jojoba oil, the buildable color glides on ultra creamy, which comes as a surprise considering its water-resistant wear powered by Glossier’s Lip Grip Complex. Trust us, just draw a line on the back of your hand and you’ll need some extra elbow grease to scrub off the pigment. Say goodbye to those overly-drying lip liners that fade away after a short period of wear, and wave hello to your new lip bestie that you can count on in the sweltering summer heat.

As someone who’d rather wear my lips bare than re-apply my lip color every other hour of the day, the concept of Lip Line seemed right up my alley. I’ve been playing with the shades Bit, Buff, and Hold for days, but I’ve officially landed on Graze as the closest shade to my natural peachy-rose lips. In all honesty, this product is a game-changer. The liner’s color match makes overlining the lips practically foolproof (or applying color without a mirror on-the-go), and its exceptionally smooth, comfortable wear allows it to double as a long-wear lipstick, too.

I found that I only needed one reapplication during a typical work day, and then once more before a dinner date to re-saturate the color. But, even as the pigment softens from eating or drinking, it almost leaves behind a tinted stain effect that doesn’t look splotchy like most other lip liners on the market. What’s more, it wears beautifully under my extensive collection of hydrating lip balms and lip oils (including Balm Dotcalm) and doesn’t budge under a healthy swipe of lipstick, making for a trusty, staple lip color that serves as the foundation for any and every type of glam look.

The Glossier Lip Line Enhancing Pencil rings in at $18 and is available to shop now at Glossier.com and Sephora, along with the accompanying Pencil Precision Sharpener. The brand’s first-ever lip liner is bound to get a lot of buzz, so make sure to secure your perfect shade before Glossier fans swipe all the stock.
