What Is the Doggy-Style Sex Position?

Also known as simply “doggy,” the doggy-style sex position is a classic position that involves one partner on all fours while the other partner penetrates them from behind, Dr. Muthoni says. And though there are many variations on the doggy-style position (more on this below), it’s a fairly easy position to get into.

If you’re the receiving partner, simply place your hands and knees on a bed or surface so you’re on all fours. Then, allow your partner to enter you from behind as they kneel or stand. Just note that this position provides for deep penetration, so if you find yourself feeling like it’s too much, don’t be afraid to try a different angle or encourage your partner to slow down on the thrusting. As a general rule of thumb, sex should never hurt, so if it does, consider that your cue to switch things up or add more lube.

Doggy-Style Sex-Position Benefits

People may enjoy doggy-style sex for a variety of reasons, but a main one is because of how animalistic and primal it feels. In fact, Dr. Muthoni notes the “psychological thrill” the position can bring since the penetrating partner is largely in control of the speed and depth of the thrusts. (Just make sure to discuss the pressure, speed, and depth you enjoy with your partner both before and while having sex so you can be on the same page.)

Another benefit: if you ever feel worried about your O face or what your facial expressions look like during sex, you may enjoy this position since there’s no eye contact involved. Really, you shouldn’t be worried about what your face looks like during sex – you’re experiencing lots of pleasure, after all! – but if you’re a bit self-conscious, this sex position might allow you to let go of your inhibitions more than in a face-to-face position like missionary.

Another reason the doggy-style sex position is a fan favorite is because of its easy G-spot access, Dr. Muthoni says. The G-spot is located about one to two inches inside the vaginal wall, and the doggy position is one of the best sex positions for stimulating the G-spot because of its positioning.

Doggy-Style Sex-Position Tips

Add a sex toy to the mix. If you enjoy clitoral stimulation, doggy is an easy position in which to incorporate a sex toy, Dr. Muthoni says. You can place a vibrator on your clitoris from the front while your partner penetrates you from behind.

Try a variation. If doggy starts to feel stale or isn’t comfortable for you, don’t be afraid to move into a variation. Dr. Muthoni suggests standing doggy, where “the penetrating partner stands behind the receiving partner while they are bent over.” There’s also flat doggy style (aka the lazy-dog sex position), which allows the receiving partner to lie flat on their stomach as the penetrating partner hovers on top. From that position, you could also try placing a pillow under your hips, which will scoot up your booty and allow your partner to thrust deeper. And lastly, don’t be afraid to move things outside of the bedroom and try doggy over a kitchen table or the couch, in the shower, or wherever your imagination takes you.

Mix it up with anal sex. Doggy style isn’t just great for vaginal penetration, it can make anal penetration easier, too. In a doggy position, start by using small toys like anal beads or butt plugs, and work your way up to larger penetration as you get used to the sensations. If you’re into a blended orgasm, you can also encourage your partner to insert a finger into your anus while they vaginally penetrate you, or you can wear a butt plug during vaginal sex to score the same feeling.

Use lube. A good lube really does make everything feel better. “This can help to increase pleasure and make the experience more enjoyable for both partners,” Dr. Muthoni says. If you’re using a sex toy made out of silicone, stick with water-based lube, since silicone-based lubes can break down the material of the sex toy. And if you’re using a condom, refrain from using oil-based lubes, which can cause latex condoms to deteriorate and reduce their effectiveness as a barrier against pregnancy or STIs.
