Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved raiding my parents’ closets. My dad has the coolest jackets and the best sense of style, and my mom’s wardrobe is filled with timeless classics. Her pieces from the ’90s and early 2000s are usually my favorites, thanks to the impeccable quality and perfect fit. Unfortunately, both of my parents love getting rid of their “old” clothes without my knowledge – my mom especially has passed along so many treasures with the reasoning that they’re not really her style or they’re not “in” anymore. From my grandmother’s furs and vintage dresses to Levi’s jeans, basically everything I’d want to get my hands on is now being worn by people outside our family.
One piece that always stuck with me was a pair of denim overalls my mom wore when she was pregnant with me. They had that effortless, relaxed vibe, and I’ve been searching for something similar for years. Overalls hadn’t really made a comeback until recently, so when I spotted Free People’s We The Free Good Luck Barrel Overalls ($148), I instantly gravitated towards them.
Ordering them was a bit of a challenge – every color I wanted kept selling out since they’re a Free People bestseller. Eventually, I managed to snag the shade Going Steady. When the package arrived, the first thing I noticed was how heavy it was. Once I opened it, I understood why: these overalls are made from a thick, substantial denim that feels high quality and durable.
Despite their weight on a hanger, once you put them on they’re surprisingly comfortable. I don’t usually love wearing jeans if the fabric is too rough or restrictive, but these feel nothing like that. The oversize cut gives them an airy, relaxed fit to a point where it almost feels like you’re not wearing denim at all. Even in the summer heat, they’re breathable and easy to move around in.
What I Love About the We The Free Good Luck Barrel Overalls
- Comfort first: They feel more like a sweatsuit than stiff denim – perfect for running errands, grabbing lunch with friends, or just day-to-day wear.
- Versatility: While I probably wouldn’t wear them to a fancy dinner, they’re easy to dress up or down depending on the color and how you style them.
- Petite-friendly sizing: They come in regular, tall, and short lengths, which is a game-changer for someone like me (I’m 5’2″) who usually has to get jeans hemmed. These fit me perfectly right out of the package.
These overalls are comfortable and effortlessly cool – exactly like the piece I wish my mom had held onto from the ’90s – but luckily, I get to make my own version of that memory now.
