Before Jenna Lyons was making waves on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New York City,” she starred in her own reality show, “Stylish With Jenna Lyons,” on Max. Before that, she was the executive creative director of J.Crew, and the list goes on and on. This is all to say, calling Lyons a style icon is an understatement. Her signature look typically involves her thick-framed glasses, a button-down shirt, and a bright red lip. According to her makeup artist, Kasey Spickard, she wears the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick ($15) in the shade 78 Chili Pepper – and I just had to try it for myself.

Keep reading for my full review of Lyons’s favorite lip product, the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick.

What I Like About the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick

Putting on a bold red lip is a surefire way to look like a boss, and Lyons is proof. When she’s wearing this red matte lipstick, she keeps the rest of her makeup look light just because she can – the color speaks for itself. Though the shade is brighter than I typically go for, I was excited to see how it looked on me.

78 Chili Pepper is described as a matte red-orange, and having swatched the sample, I can confirm it leans very orange. As someone who typically opts for true, cherry-red lipsticks, I was initially a little concerned about how it would look on me. However, I was committed to trying this admittedly aggressive hue.

The lipstick itself is rather small, making it perfect for fitting in a clutch and taking on the go. It has a small doe-foot applicator that makes it easy to line your lips perfectly, especially the cupid’s bow. The whipped, creamy texture of the lip cream spreads evenly and offers full coverage with a single swipe, but a second coat really punches up the color. It goes on smoothly but quickly dries to a matte finish. After a few hours, it starts to feel a little tight as most matte lipsticks do, but it’s by no means uncomfortable.

Lyons’s signature shade, 78 Chili Pepper, ended up looking great on me (not to brag or anything). The color was bright and super impactful, garnering me tons of compliments from coworkers throughout the day. It also stayed put for hours with minimal smudging or fading, which is a major plus because red lipstick can be daunting to wear otherwise.

How to Use the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick

I decided the maiden voyage of this new lipstick should be a busy workday with back-to-back meetings. For the rest of my makeup, I kept things fresh and natural looking, skipping the eyeliner and eyeshadow altogether. Before applying the lip cream, I made sure my mouth was dry and clean. Then I just went to town lining and filling in my bottom and top lips, slowing down only to meticulously line my cupid’s bow.

After just a few seconds it dries completely and you can go about your day without fear that it’ll smudge or transfer.

What to Consider Before Trying the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick

The Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick is perfect for anyone looking for a long-lasting, ultra-saturated lip product. Just keep in mind that if your skin and lips tend to get dry, the matte formula may feel a little tight at times. That said, it’s by no means as dry as most matte liquid lipsticks on the market.
