Not long ago, if you asked me how I was feeling at any point of any day, I would likely respond without hesitation: tired. I realize that I am far from alone on this front, and TBH I had just accepted it as the new norm. As a mom to two young children (ages 4 and 7) with a long to-do list, how could I not be tired? It felt like I had an unhealthy cycle on repeat: wine to calm down at night followed by several cups of coffee in the morning to wake up, work, work out, and more. Between managing the mental load of a profession that requires extreme clarity to curate story concepts, execute interviews, and write, plus a passion to weave in workouts that inevitably lead to body fatigue and muscle soreness – I felt burnt out.

I was scrolling on Instagram one evening when a Broc Shot ad popped up in my feed. The broccoli-sprout supplement promised improved energy and highlighted its key compound, sulforaphane, which I’d never heard of. I did some research and realized that sulforaphane has tons of health benefits, including having positive effects on cognitive function and mood. (Yes, please!) What’s more is that research has also shown sulforaphane to be associated with a decrease in inflammation as well as an ability to counteract chemical toxin exposure from daily life and support overall health.

All of this was more than enough to convince me to add the Broc Shot Original Starter Kit ($70-$85) to my cart. Sure, it was partly because I wanted to feel more like a younger version of myself before the wine and coffee circle. But there was actually a richer reason that I wanted to take control of my health. Since I turned 40 I have been diagnosed with two early-stage melanomas. Luckily, both were caught and cut out before they entered my bloodstream and led to other complications. But because of these findings, I see my dermatologist every three months for a full-body scan to stay proactive and find any new cancerous or abnormal growths before they become an issue and I’m more at risk for developing future skin cancers, and well, cancer in general. It’s important to me now more than ever to bolster my body’s natural armor to ward off outside toxins and support my health holistically. So I decided to give Broc Shot a try, and after a few months it became the hero of my morning ritual.

What I Like About Broc Shot

Although it looks like a classic green powder, Broc Shot is truly unique. As mentioned earlier, it contains 15 milligrams of natural sulforaphane, a sulfur-rich compound found in broccoli sprouts that’s a powerful activator of the body’s defense system, including the ability to neutralize toxins, improve cognitive function and mood, and lower inflammation and muscle fatigue.

The best part? Instead of popping anywhere from three to 10 supplements daily to complete my wellness checklist, Broc Shot offers a single, daily, convenient shot that eliminates the need for too many superfluous supplements. I try to take it first thing in the morning – before or in place of a cup of coffee so I can gauge how much I actually need to wake up, if any. I also like it as a morning ritual because I’ve found that I feel less achy and tired during my weight training and sprints, too. If that’s not possible because my morning goes off course, then I’ll take it whenever I can. I’ve noticed that staying consistent is key – if I skip it for even a day or two, I feel the difference. Luckily the tiny travel-friendly and 100 percent compostable sachets and reusable metal canister make it easy to shake up the shot whenever, wherever. I also love that it’s perfectly pre-dosed, so no scooping and mixing is required. I just pour the powder, add water, shake, and drink. Whenever I feel even a sniffle coming on, I’ll double up a dose, and I have found that I’m warding off colds and fatigue better than I have in years.

I’ve also noticed a vast improvement in my focus and energy. After only a few weeks of daily use, I have less dependence on caffeine. Plus, my post-fitness recovery time has shortened and muscle soreness has decreased. That’s likely due to the fact that SFN has been shown to help balance the body’s natural inflammatory response and repair the body on a cellular level. According to a study in GeroScience, SFN helps keep mitochondria, the powerhouse component of cells, stay energized, and assists the body in cleaning out dead cells while maintaining healthy cells. What’s more, in a Johns Hopkins clinical study of 300 people, consuming a broccoli-sprout beverage rich in sulforaphane helped their bodies naturally excrete carcinogens at a higher rate.

What’s Worth Noting About Broc Shot

For starters, there is a distinct earthy, veggie-esque taste that you may have to get used to. But it comes in three flavors – Classic, Ginger Lime, and Pineapple Mint, the last of which is my personal go-to. Outside of taste, it’s important to note that you should avoid SFN if you know or believe you may have a sulfur allergy or have a sensitivity to aspirin, because broccoli is high in salicylates. Also if you’re taking blood thinners, always talk to your doctor before taking any new medication or supplement, including Broc Shot, because SFN has been shown to have some potential blood-thinning properties. If you’re currently in cancer treatment, you should also consult your physician, because SFN could affect how certain medications are processed through the liver.
