For the opening night of her Broadway debut, actress Madeline Brewer wanted to channel the energy of Becky Shaw.
“It might be a little risque for the Broadway crowd,” she says of her dress, “but I’m playing a complicated woman and a woman who wears the wrong dress to a party. So I’m just leaning in.”
Brewer worked with stylist Bailey Moon to select a daring Sportmax dress in a soft yellow satin for the opening night of new play “Becky Shaw,” in which she plays the title character. The show, about a blind date that goes off the rails, also stars Patrick Ball, Alden Ehrenreich, Linda Emond and Lauren Patten.
“The Second Stage carpet has got this bright orange background. So I wanted to wear something that would still pop and be seen on that carpet,” Brewer says. “I want to wear something that pops just in a mode to Becky. I mean, Becky’s dress looks like a birthday cake, so I didn’t really want to go that far, but I wanted to wear something that is eye-catching. And I feel very comfortable in my body, so I’m happy to wear something kind of sexy, but still very cool and young. I’m still pretty young. So I also just wanted to feel really beautiful and confident.”

The brightness of the dress immediately felt like Becky’s optimism to Brewer when she first tried it on.
“She’s a fighter. She’s strong and she knows herself very well,” she says. “And I feel like this look does all of that, honestly. I know that sounds kind of silly, but it really does. I feel very confident in it. I feel very Becky in it.”
Prior to each show, Brewer has built a routine of working her way through her Becky Shaw playlist, filled with “Lover Girl” by Laufey, “Save Me” by Amy Mann and Wet Leg’s cover of “Daisy” by Ashnikko.
“There’s some of them that I couldn’t even possibly explain why and when, but they just hit that place in my brain that is my Becky’s brain,” she says. “Feeling the music just gets me in the body and mind.”
