Madonna returned to the MTV VMAs on Sunday night in a pair of classic black pumps, but it was another pair of stilettos from more than four decades ago that came up while she accepted one of the night’s biggest awards.
Taking the stage to accept Artist of the Year for “Confessions II,” Madonna looked back at her performance at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in 1984, when losing one of her shoes during “Like a Virgin” led to the wardrobe mishap that could have ended her career.
“I had a little problem with my shoes, and one of my stilettos fell off,” Madonna recalled during her acceptance speech. She said she dove onto the stage to retrieve it while trying to make the move look intentional, only for her dress to flip up in the process.

“I went backstage feeling really proud of myself, and my manager told me that my career was over,” she said, before correcting herself to clarify that it was actually her now former manager’s assistant.
More than 40 years later, Madonna accepted Artist of the Year wearing decidedly more secure-looking pair of glossy black pumps. The angular silhouette consisted of sharp pointed toes that seemed to transition into textural black. Stiletto heels rounded out the simple but effective set. She wore what appeared to be the same pair while accepting the Dance award as well.
Many celebrities these days have opted for a classic pump, something simple that doesn’t clash with the rest of their ensembles. The staple piece was especially popular during New York Fashion Week earlier this month, with stars including Kate Moss, Jordyn Woods and more embracing the classic shoe silhouette.
Alongside her classic footwear, the “Like a Prayer” singer went grunge, pairing an oversize leather jacket with spiked accents layered over a black satin corseted bodysuit with lacing up the front. Black lace fingerless gloves adorned her hands, a staple accessory in Madonna’s wardrobe.
Madonna had told the story of her 1984 shoe mishap before. During a previous interview on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Madonna recalled her infamous “Like a Virgin” wardrobe malfunction.
“I did that show and I walked down these very steep stairs of a wedding cake,” Madonna explained. “I got to the bottom and I start dancing around and my white stiletto pumps fell off, and I was trying to do this smooth move, like dive for the shoe and make it look like it was choreography. My dress flipped up and my butt was showing. Can you imagine?”
Sunday’s retelling came with a wildly different ending. Madonna took home seven awards at the 2026 MTV VMAs, including Artist of the Year, Best Album and Best Dance, and opened the ceremony with her first stateside VMAs performance in 23 years. Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX joined the singer during her performance.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards returned to Los Angeles on Sunday at the Peacock Theater, marking the show’s first West Coast edition since 2017. Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony, which aired live on CBS and MTV and streams on Paramount+. Madonna, this year’s most-nominated artist, opened the show, while Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award and Taylor Swift was honored with MTV’s inaugural Artist Director Honors.
