Mr Porter and Stone Island took over Chez Jay in Santa Monica, Calif., on Thursday night.
The online men’s retailer and Italian luxury sportswear brand came together to host an intimate dinner with chef Eddie Huang, bringing his New York BaoHaus concept to Los Angeles for one night.
The evening started in the restaurant’s outdoor area in the back, where guests gathered over margaritas and mingled before being summoned inside. A tight squeeze, Chez Jay’s history — dating back to 1959 on Ocean Avenue, run by the late Jay Fiondella — was on display, with old photographs of Hollywood stars lining the walls and the restaurant’s lived-in feel left intact.
Hosted by Mr Porter chief executive officer Toby Bateman and Stone Island president and CEO Robert Triefus, the evening was a gathering of the brands’ friends, clients and creative community, with food at the center of the night. Guests included actors Ethan Peck and Steven Yeun, stylist Nausheen Shah, Art Production Fund’s Casey Fremont, producer Kenny Beats, musician Alex Sowinski, model John Pearson, photographer Atiba Jefferson, and artists Paris Brosnan, Cam Hicks, Kohshin Finley and Delfin Finley.

Once dinner began, the crowd was spread out across the space, filling the booths, taking seats at the bar and gathering around tables in the middle of the restaurant. For the night, Huang created a special menu that brought together BaoHaus flavors and Chez Jay’s tavern-style cooking. Dishes included Grand Marnier sand dab bao, bay scallop dan dan noodles and Chinois steak au poivre.
Huang eventually emerged from the kitchen to thank Mr Porter and Stone Island before making his way around the restaurant, repeatedly receiving praise and offering his thanks.
