The Boss is back in town.
Keke Palmer, who has dubbed herself “The Boss” on social media after her “Big Boss” album, opted for retro-inspired tailoring on Saturday in Los Angeles at the 55th NAACP Image Awards. The singer and actress appeared on the red carpet at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall embracing a look that nodded to Sammy Davis Jr.
Palmer chose to slick her hair back into a tight bun. The style complemented her menswear-inspired look. She wore an oversize white dinner coat by Tom Ford with a white dress shirt and a black bowtie. She also wore wide-leg black trousers. The look was styled by Seth Chernoff.
“It’s a little ode to entertainers, the vaudevillians, the Sammy Davis Jr.’s, Julie Andrews, a little ‘Victor/Victoria,’” Palmer told Terrence J before the event.
But she wasn’t the only one to channel retro inspiration. Usher seemed to find inspiration from the 1970s. His black silk suit fit close around the body, with a shirt unbuttoned to the chest. The pants featured a flare at the bottom.
John Boyega also was looking backwards. He wore a double breasted pinstripe oversized suit with a matching trench coat.
The 2024 NAACP Image Awards honor the accomplishments of Black creatives in film, television and music. Queen Latifah hosted the ceremony and winners were announced prior to the show’s air date. This year’s honorees include Usher, H.E.R., Megan Thee Stallion, June Ambrose and Ciara.
