Sparkles and sequin embellishments took the runways of Valentino, Jil Sander and Rick Owens by storm this year. Between the Oscars and the Met Gala, stars also took to the fad, breaking out their best glittering garments in shades of silver, orange and blue, to name a few.
Among the A-listers who embraced shimmer and shine were Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman and Salma Hayek, who set the trend for awards season.
Ahead, WWD looks back at the boldest and brightest ensembles on the red carpet this year.
Jessica Chastain
Chastain glistened in an Oscar de la Renta gown, which featured a crystallized spider web pattern laid over nude tulle. The actress was assisted by her longtime stylist, Elizabeth Stewart.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett gave an old gown new life at the SAG Awards. The actress’ Giorgio Armani frock featured lace from a gown that she wore in 2014 and 2018. She accessorized with Louis Vuitton cocktail rings and earrings in the shape of the brand’s signature monogram flower. Black leather pumps completed Blanchett’s look.
Salma Hayek
Hayek made a bold entrance in a red-orange Gucci gown covered in sequins. Her halterneck frock, which she accessorized with a rose gold clutch, was adorned with glittering fringe. Hayek was dressed by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, whose other clients include Florence Pugh, Lily James and Gemma Chan.
Nicole Kidman
Kidman took on the sequin trend in a one-shoulder gown by Armani Privé, which featured large floral appliques and a sultry thigh-high slit. Diamond jewels and pointed-toe pumps completed her ensemble.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner merged the no-pants trend with sequins, sporting a collared Marc Jacobs bodysuit with trailing flared sleeves. The supermodel added on a pair of towering platform boots, sheer Wolford stockings and a pair of large diamond studs by Lorraine Schwartz.
Doja Cat
Doja Cat donned a crystallized creation by Oscar de la Renta. Her custom gown featured a feathered train and a hood complete with cat ears, and she also wore a facial prosthetic, paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld‘s beloved feline, Choupette. The rapper accessorized with diamond jewelry by Messika, which included a headband with a large pear-shaped pendant, as well as a matching armband, bracelets and rings.
Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia Rodrigo’s glittering Ludovic de Saint Sernin gown was encrusted with 150,000 Swarovski crystals. The singer added on a pair of sparkly open-toe platforms by Roger Vivier. Stylist Danielle Goldberg, who also dresses Lily Aldridge, Laura Harrier and Kaia Gerber, curated Rodrigo’s look for the event.
Sofia Carson
Sofia Carson opted for head-to-toe sparkle in a cobalt ensemble from Alexandre Vauthier’s fall 2022 couture collection. Carson’s look consisted of a long-sleeve dress with statement shoulders, which was embellished with increasingly larger paillettes, matching her pair of pointy boots.
Demi Moore
Demi Moore sparkled in a silver strapless midi dress by Carolina Herrera, pairing it with black Stuart Weitzman heels and an envelope clutch, also by Herrera. Stylist Brad Goreski put together the actress’ ensemble, which came from the Venezuelan label’s spring 2024 collection.
Amal Clooney
Amal Clooney’s Atelier Versace frock featured orange sequin embellishments. The human rights lawyer also carried a metallic clutch.
