The significance of quality sleep is undeniable, and the bedding and environment that you’re in can make such a major difference in scoring better sleep. So why not treat yourself to the best luxury bedding on the market? Luxury bedding and ordinary bedding differ in several crucial aspects, ranging from materials and craftsmanship to design and overall quality.
Luxury bedding is often made from high-quality materials like Egyptian or Pima cotton, linen, or silk, which are known for their superior softness, durability, and undeniably sumptuous feel. Aside from material, thread count and weaves can make all of the difference. Higher thread counts and weaves, like percale, sateen, or jersey, also provide a range of textures and finishes. When considering shopping for luxury bedding, you’ll want to consider your climate, home décor aesthetic, and personal preferences. Since luxury bedding is an investment, you’ll want to make sure that you’re getting bed sheets and duvet covers that accommodate your lifestyle.
There are plenty of luxury bedding available, and it can be hard to decipher what bed sheets and duvet cover sets are worth buying. To fully understand thread counts, percale vs. sateen, and a multitude of terms, we consulted interior designer, Amy Switzer, who has nearly 20 years of experience designing bedding for manufacturers. She broke down everything there is to know about luxury bedding and helped us find the best of the best to shop. Before buying new luxury bedding for yourself or for a cozy gift, look for the best material for bedding — such as Pima cotton, or bamboo-derived fabrics like bamboo rayon — and reputable high-end bedding brands, like Cozy Earth and Parachute, that specialize in superior craftsmanship and attention to detail.
With Switzer’s advice, we highlighted the best luxury bedding brands and best comforter brands on the market, tested out sheets, and curated the best luxury bedding that will have you feeling like royalty when you hit the hay.

What to Consider When Shopping for the Best Luxury Bedding
When shopping for luxury bedding, there are several important factors to consider to ensure that you select the best option for your preferences and needs. Luxury bedding distinguishes itself through several factors, explains Zwitzer. “The material quality, thread count, feel, comfort, durability, attention to detail, breathability, temperature regulation, brand reputation, and certification are what sets luxury bedding apart from everything else in the market.”
Before investing in luxury bedding, you’ll want to pay attention to these key considerations:
- Materials: Look for bedding made from high-quality materials such as Egyptian or Pima cotton, luxury Italian bed linens, or silk. These materials are known for their superior softness and luxurious feel. The quality of the material affects the durability and longevity of your bedding, which makes for a worthwide investment.
- Thread count: Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch of fabric. In high-quality bedding, a moderately high thread count, typically ranging from 300 to 800 threads per square inch, often indicates a balance between softness, breathability, and durability. While a higher thread count can indicate a denser weave and potentially smoother texture, it’s not the sole indicator of quality, explains Switzer. “Sometimes, manufacturers use multi-ply threads (where multiple thinner threads are twisted together) to inflate the thread count without necessarily improving quality,” she says.
- Certifications: When shopping for luxury bedding, Switzer advises looking for bedding that holds certifications such as Oeko-Tex Standard-100 or certifications indicating organic or sustainably sourced materials. “These can indicate a commitment to quality and ethical manufacturing practices which is very important.”
- Price: Luxury bedding often comes with a higher price tag, so consider your budget and be prepared to invest in a quality product. However, also be cautious of inflated prices that may not necessarily reflect superior quality, advises Swizter. In addition to the price, bedding should reflect important materials and certifications that are associated with luxury bedding.
- Brand Reputation: Many brands have warranties, which is nice since luxury bedding isn’t cheap. If a brand has a warranty for its customers, it typically means that they have trust in their quality and you can feel confident in your purchase. Be sure to check reviews and other sources to make sure the brand is reputable.
The Best Luxury Bedding Materials
Besides the initial soft-to-the-touch feel found in the best luxury bedding, you’ll also want to consider your climate environment, overall home aesthic, and sleeping habits when selecting luxury bedding, explains Zwitzer. “In warmer regions, breathable and lightweight materials, like linen or bamboo rayon, are great choices as they help maintain a cooler sleep environment. Warmer and insulating materials such as flannel or thicker cotton might be more suitable for colder climates to provide extra warmth and comfort,” she says.
Here are some of the top luxury bedding materials to consider:
- Linen: Linen sheets are valued for its breathability, natural texture, and ability to regulate temperature. They have a relaxed, lived-in feel and look, which is among the most low maintenance options. Linen can be machine-washed, and its casual appearance means it does not require ironing. Some individuals enjoy the natural texture of linen, while others may prefer the smoothness of materials like cotton or silk.
- Silk: Silk bedding is incredibly smooth, soft, and luxurious, and great for someone looking for bedding that also benefits their skin. The luxury material is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, making silk a popular choice for individuals with allergies or sensitive skin. The smooth surface reduces friction against hair and skin, which helps minimize hair breakage and reduces the appearance of sleep lines.
- Cotton: There is a range of cotton that is popular in luxury bedding, which differs based on origin of the material. Egyptian and Pima share similar characteristics, such as long staple fibers that contribute to their softness and durability. Cotton is highly breathable and wicks away moisture from the body, making it a great choice for those who run hot and might experience night sweats or hot flashes.
- Bamboo: Bamboo-derived fabric is sustainable and eco-friendly, with a similar softness and feel of cashmere or silk sheets. It is soft, breathable, and is thermo-regulating, meaning it can adapt to the body’s temperature, providing warmth in cooler weather and a cool feel in warmer weather. While individual experiences may vary, well-made bamboo sheets can withstand regular use and washing.
