I ordered this one from Amazon and it came super fast. It will literally pack into a bag about the size of a large can of food, which is awesome both for fitting in luggage but also into bag during the day if it gets warm. The fit is super flattering, runs true to size, and I can fit it over a sweater without feeling bulky. It felt dressy enough to wear with my business casual clothes but also is great for jeans or outdoor activities. This may not be enough for the coldest of winters but layering well definitely extends its use. I will probably purchase in additional colors.”

Best Puffer Jacket for Cold Weather Activities

Nike Sportswear Swoosh Puffer Primeloft Jacket

Sizes: XS-XXL
Colorways: White, black, olive
Insulation: Nike Therma-fit and Primaloft and Thermoplume technology
Fabric: Recycled polyester
Cold Weather Features: Oversized hood, zip pockets

The Nike Sportswear Swoosh Puffer Primeloft Jacket is a must-try if you’re on the hunt for a heavy-duty puffer for winter sports. Nike’s Therma-Fit technology helps to regulate your body temperature in the cold, while Thermoplume down alternative insulation traps your natural heat close to your body. This puffer coat features an oversized fit and extra large hood, plus zip side pockets to warm up your paws in the cold.

What testers say: “I was very surprised by how warm this puffer is, considering it is pretty lightweight. It seems to lock in your body temperature well and would be great in cold weather. I am usually not a fan of puffy jackets, but this one is a more cropped fit hitting right at my waistline for a more flattering look. The little details are what make this a great coat — the pockets have zippers which is huge for me because I am always nervous about losing things. Instead of the flap that covers the zipper having multiple buttons, it only has one at the top and bottom (I hate zipping up a jacket and then having three to five buttons to deal with). And the hood is pretty big with adjusters. Overall I really like the feel of this coat and think it will be great for mild to severe winter weather!”

What testers say: “It’s really nice that they come in different lengths and colors. I love that the pockets are lined to keep your hands warm. I wish that body width could be a little tailored. What to Look for When Shopping for a Women’s Puffer Jacket

Insulation: When it comes to a warm puffer jacket, insulation and material are the most important things to look for. “The best insulation for a puffer coat remains to be goose down,” says Shai Peyser, President of The Very Warm, says. “However, with the current climate, both literally and figuratively, there are new options that are cruelty-free and make a difference by repurposing plastics that might otherwise end up in landfills. Alternative downs are more than sufficient for the non-arctic environments, which luckily includes most of the globe. For traditional goose-down fills, many brands will indicate the insulation power level of the coat, like 650-fill power. The higher the number, the more warmth power the fill has. For a down alternative, look to synthetics, polyester, or eco-friendly recycled plastic materials. Some of these are nearly as warm as goose down, depending on the blend.

Cold weather features: Puffer jackets can vary with additional weather-proof features. Besides insulation, Peyser says, “the other secret to guaranteed warmth is avoiding openings that allow the cold to get in. Always look for a coat with a good seal at the hem, sleeves, and, if applicable, a hood. These are all crucial to getting that seal around your body, trapping the warm air inside, and providing optimal warmth,” Peyser continues. Pay attention to coats that deliver on wind-proof materials, as well as extra features like fleece-lined pockets, bonus lining, and removable elements that you can alter based on the weather.

Material: If you’re planning to wear your puffer jacket in snow, rain, or intense winter conditions, you’ll want to ensure the fabric is water-repellent, waterproof, or, at the very least, resistant. Typical materials include nylon, polyamide, and recycled polyester. In addition, be sure to look for wind-resistant fabrics if you’re looking for something heavy-duty.

Length: There are four major lengths to choose from in puffer jackets: cropped, classic/short, mid-thigh, and long. A longline puffer jacket is a way to go if you prefer optimal coverage and warmth. However, if you want something more casual or lightweight, a short or cropped puffer jacket will suit you best. “Long and short puffers are a practical investment that can last you years, but short puffers tend to be more of a canvas for brands to play with each year, be it colors, prints, or other interesting styling options,” Peyser explains.

Bulkiness: Puffer jackets range in levels of bulkiness and weight. If you prefer something you can layer over thick winter sweaters, try wearing a puffer jacket that is slightly oversized or loose. And if you get hot easily, a lightweight puffer jacket is probably the wiser decision.

The Different Types of Puffer Jackets

  • Cropped puffer jackets: Cropped puffer jackets are a great option for mixing warm function and style. They often sit just below the waistline, making them the perfect coat to pair with high-waisted jeans or comfortable pants. Be sure to double-check that your cropped puffer includes side pockets to keep your hands warm, as some versions omit them for lack of space. Cropped puffer jackets are best for fall or mild winters, since they fail to insulate the lower torso and legs in harsh weather.
  • Knee-length puffer jackets: Puffer jackets that extend to the knee are some of the warmest coats you can buy for winter. They maximize insulation on the majority of your body, often with down or other fill alternatives, and include plenty of side and interior pockets for safe storage. This type of puffer jacket is best for outdoor activities in snow or slush, because it protects your outfit from getting wet and holds in all your body heat.
  • Longline puffer jackets: According to Peyser, “The long puffer will always be a good investment for the utility alone. Brands tend to take fewer risks with long puffers because they’re already a significant investment for most. A simple and warm long puffer will always be in style.”
  • Fleece-lined puffer jackets: Fleece-lined puffer jackets are ideal for those who are extra sensitive to the cold. You can also find fleece lining in almost any puffer jacket style, such as knee-length or cropped puffer jackets. Fleece works as an ideal heat insulator because it’s lightweight and soft to the touch, which gives a puffer jacket an extra-cozy feel.
  • Leather puffer jackets: Leather puffer jackets are a savvy way to add edge to your outwear style. Like typical leather jackets, they’re available in both genuine leather and vegan leather options. They contain similar padding and insulation like other puffers and front a thick leather shell. While leather isn’t snow or waterproof, it is water-resistant, heavy, and retains heat well. It’s best for mild outdoor activities, such as running errands or going out to dinner.

How Do You Style a Puffer Jacket — Puffer Jacket Outfit Ideas

  • For brunch: Looking to put together a stylish outfit for mimosas with friends? Puffer jackets and jeans are perfect pairings. More specifically, opt for baggy jeans and sneakers or straight-leg jeans that can tuck into combat boots. Add chunky gold hoops, an oversized scarf, and a slouchy designer bag. This outfit equation will present casual confidence with minimal effort.
  • For an exercise class: Don’t let the cold weather get between you and your workout. Grab a puffer jacket from brands like Nike, Alo Yoga, adidas, The North Face, or Lululemon. Each of these brands offer a bountiful amount of insulating puffer coats that keep the heat in after breaking a sweat. Then amp up your look with sporty credentials like gym leggings, a high-impact sports bra, ankle-length socks, and sneakers.
  • For dinner: On the hunt for a piece with after-dark appeal? Look for a puffer jacket that includes shearling or fur accents. Even a belted coat in a sumptuous moody hue will do the trick. Then complement your jacket with anything from leather pants and a second-skin top to a bright mini dress and knee-high boots, depending on your mood.
  • For travel: If you’re traveling to a cold destination, wear your puffer coat on the plane to leave room in your luggage for other essentials. Plus, if your puffer coat has a long silhouette, it can double as a blanket or a pillow for the car or plane ride. To ensure you stay comfortable during your travels, team your puffer coat with leggings, a T-shirt, and a sweater. You can also lean on joggers and a hoodie for maximum relaxation. Finally, accessorize with a chic overnight bag or a carry-all tote bag.

How Do You Wash a Puffer Jacket?

Rather than throwing your puffer jacket into the washing machine without any research, follow these simple to wash and dry it properly. Make sure to pay attention the brand’s wash instruction before placing your purchase, as some styles and fabrics may be machine-washable or require dry cleaning.

  • Prepare: First, empty all the pockets, close all the velcro closures, and ensure that your down jacket is completely zipped all the way up. If your coat has any faux-fur trims, make sure those are removed as well.
  • Machine wash and dry: If the label on your puffer says you can machine wash it, find a detergent that is specifically designed for down feathers to ensure they’re kept fluffy. Then, set your washing machine to a gentle cycle on low heat. After the wash cycle, place the jacket into a machine dryer set on low heat. Avoid drying other clothes with your jacket, as drying it with other materials like denim could damage its shell.
  • Hand wash and dry: If your coat’s label indicates that it can’t be machine washed, hand washing it will work just fine. Fill up your sink or bathtub with warm water, adding down-specific detergent into the water. Allow your down jacket to soak for up to an hour, and then rinse and ring out the water. Then, place your jacket on a coat hanger and hang it up in a place that’s dry and cool (humid environments can cause your puffer jacket to smell).
