With the evolution in red carpet dressing over the past year, when celebrities and stylists shifted their attention to archival fashion, there’s an excitement to see what guests will wear on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet this year. Are we going to see more vintage McQueen or more Givenchy by John Galliano?
Historically, the Cannes Film Festival has been a huge fashion runway for actresses and models. In the 1960s and 1970s, when social media wasn’t on the scene, the stars would show off their glamorous gowns, knowing pictures of the event would circulate around the world.
In 1987, when Princess Diana was becoming a fashion force, she made a statement on the carpet, wearing a blue chiffon gown designed by Catherine Walker. The moment propelled the event to a new light.
Angelina Jolie had many highs at the festival, including in 2008, when she flaunted her baby bump in a Max Azria olive-green maternity gown.
While we wait to see what the stars will wear at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival from May 14 to 25, WWD remembers the best dressed guests of all time.
