A few months ago, I got lip filler for the first time and I hated the results so much that I got it dissolved two weeks later. The entire experience was a little traumatic to say the least, and ever since then, I’ve been looking for ways I can naturally improve my pout – without the need for filler. I’m a big fan of plumping lip products, but if the past few months have taught me anything, it’s that finding the right formula can be difficult. I’ve tested a few that made my mouth feel like it was firmly situated in hell (read: they burn horribly), as well as a few products where I didn’t feel anything at all.
My favorite products are the ones that are long-lasting but not sticky, have good color payoff, and moisturize for hours on end. Recently, I was introduced to a product that does all of that and more, and to say I was impressed was an understatement.

About the Rodan + Fields Plumping Lip Oil
- This is a plumping lip oil with SPF 28.
- The key ingredients include zinc oxide to protect lips from the sun; a mix of peptides to plump the lips; menthol, which has a cooling sensation; vitamin F and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the lips; and vitamin C and sunflower seed oil to brighten lip tone and soften lips.
- It comes in four shades: pink, berry, peach, and coral.
- It has no added fragrance but has a minty scent due to the menthol ingredient.
- It comes in one size, 5ml.
What I Like About the Rodan + Fields Plumping Lip Oil
The Rodan + Fields Plumping Lip Oil checks all of my boxes and then some. It glides on smoothly and doesn’t leave my lips feeling sticky after application. It doesn’t sting but instead has a gentle cooling sensation and a slight tingle. The color payoff is great, and I love every single shade (which is a rarity for me). It leaves my lips feeling moisturized after I use it, and it doesn’t dry them out. Plus, it has SPF 28, which is a huge bonus for me.
My lips are always the first thing to get burned whenever I’m in the sun, and I often skip out on wearing lip products for two reasons. One, if they contain SPF, they typically taste tremendously like sunscreen; two, if they don’t, they make my lips shiny and a beacon for sunlight to hit them.
This product doesn’t taste like sunscreen, and I love layering it on whenever I leave the house. I know that my mouth will be protected and look good at the same time.
How to Use the Rodan + Fields Plumping Lip Oil
The brand recommends applying the product to clean, dry lips as needed throughout the day. If you’re using it for sun protection, it says you should re-apply every two hours, just as you would with normal sunscreen. It also notes that you should not apply outside of the lip lines due to the plumping nature of the product.
If I’m wearing this product at home, I like to apply it every couple of hours on its own. My favorite shade for a natural look is pink because it’s fairly sheer and looks great with my natural lip color. If I plan on heading out for the night, I like to start with a nude lip liner and line the outer edges of my mouth. From there, I layer pink over my lips and add the shade berry on top.
What to Consider Before Trying the Rodan + Fields Plumping Lip Oil
If you’re planning to try this product for yourself and you only plan to purchase one colorway, I’d recommend paying close attention to the shades. Pink and peach are buildable but more sheer – they’re my favorite for a no-makeup makeup look. On the other hand, coral and berry are more pigmented, and I find they’re best when you’re looking to make a statement with your lip product.
Also, although this product does have a plumping effect, it’s not as noticeable as other products I’ve tested in the past. However, as someone who doesn’t love her lips to look blown out and overdone, I’d say this is the perfect product if you’re looking for a subtle improvement size-wise.
