In an analysis by Sourcing Journal of data from S&P Capital IQ, the public companies that make up the textile industry are big, broad and diverse. There are 639 constituents in the sector that generate $90 billion annually.

The top 100, ranked by annual revenue, produce $60.2 billion each year.

Topping the list are Texhong International, Jiangsu Sanfame and Billion Industrial, which together account for about 15 percent of the total $60.2 billion. What is also notable is that there’s a sharp drop-off after the top three, which is followed by a long, gradual tail.

The list spans the full textile value chain, from raw fiber to finished product. Here’s a breakdown:

Fiber and polymer producers: These are companies that make the raw synthetic fiber itself. Jiangsu Sanfame and Billion Industrial produce polyester. Aksa Akrilik makes acrylic fiber. Aquafil and Huvis/TK Chemical work in nylon and polyester filament. Unifi specializes in recycled polyester yarn under the Repreve brand, Avgol makes nonwoven polypropylene fiber.

Spinning and yarn: These turn fiber into yarn. Texhong, Vardhman, Nahar Spinning, Nitin Spinners, RSWM and Ilshin Spinning are cotton and blended yarn spinners. Zhewen Pictures Group (despite the name, which reflects a diversified holding company) and Huafu Fashion are wool and dyed-yarn specialists.

Woven and knit fabric: These are producers in the “greige” and finished fabric stage. Lu Thai Textile (shirting fabric), Eclat Textile (technical and sportswear fabric made for brands like Nike and Lululemon), Pacific Textiles (knit fabric), Formosa Taffeta and Arvind (denim) sit here.

Home textiles: These make finished consumer goods such as sheets and towels. Welspun Living, Trident, Indo Count, Himatsingka Seide, and Luolai Lifestyle are among the world’s largest bedding and towel makers.

Notions and trims: Coats Group (sewing thread), Taiwan Paiho (hook-and-loop fasteners, webbing) and Morito (buttons, zippers, trims) supply components rather than fabric itself.

Technical and nonwoven textiles: HangZhou Nbond Nonwovens and Avgol make nonwoven fabrics used in hygiene products, medical textiles and industrial applications rather than apparel.

Specialty apparel fabric: Best Pacific makes lace and elastic for intimate apparel. Zhejiang Hangmin is more of a textile chemicals/dyestuffs supplier than a manufacturer.

It’s important to note that S&P Capital IQ uses the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) framework. This is where “Textiles” and “Textiles, Apparel & Luxury Goods” represent different hierarchical tiers and distinct operational activities. Specifically, “Textiles, Apparel & Luxury Goods” is an industry group, while “Textiles” is a narrow sub-industry separate from finished consumer goods such as apparel or luxury items.

Stay tuned for an upcoming top 100 list of textiles, apparel and luxury goods ranked by revenue.
