Curls can be tricky during extreme temperatures. For my 4A curls, I like to do protective styles during both the chilling New York City winters and humid summers to protect my natural hair from the elements. I float between box braids, long weaves and wigs, Bantu knots, and my current favorite, two-strand twists.
To extend the life of the hairstyle as much as possible (I usually have to refresh every two days), I have been looking for curl products that provide hydration, shine, and detangling properties. I’ve been particularly impressed by how soft OCOA Hydrating Curl Cream ($20) makes my curls, with zero signs of dullness for up to four days after wash day. Not to mention, the beautiful floral scent has my hair smelling amazing.
After four weeks of use, the eight-fluid ounce cream has quickly become my go-to. Ahead, read all about my experience with the ultra-hydrating curl cream.

What I Like About the OCOA Hydrating Curl Cream
I have high-density hair, meaning there is a lot of it. When adding a new product into my routine, it has to be lightweight. I appreciate the thick and rich texture of the OCOA cream that doesn’t come off heavy on my strands.
Typically, when I apply styling products to my hair, I rely on a hairbrush or comb to amplify curl definition. But with OCOA, I can see the definition without the need for an additional tool. When doing my twist outs, I’ve noticed the formula holds in the hydration and allows my hair to look healthy and shiny for more than four days straight. I’ve worked out, walked along the water, gone to events, and gotten on an airplane with the same twist out and have not needed to redo my curls thanks to this incredible cream.
How to Use the OCOA Hydrating Curl Cream
I like to use the brand’s shampoo and conditioner before applying the curl cream. Together, they yield a clean canvas for better formula penetration. I work the curl cream in while still in the shower on sopping wet hair. First, I split my hair into four sections and make sure each section is completely detangled before splitting into smaller sections. Next, I apply the curl cream with my fingers and comb it through to make sure the product is on my roots and ends. Finally, I finish my styling by sitting under my hooded dryer for 40 minutes to allow the curls to set.
What to Consider Before Trying the OCOA Hydrating Curl Cream
The curl cream is part of the brand’s 4-Step Kit, and in my experience, produces better results if used with the other three products in the lineup – so you might be inclined to purchase all four items.
Where Is the OCOA Hydrating Curl Cream Available?
You can get the OCOA Hydrating Curl Cream on Amazon, the brand’s website, and Urban Outfitters.
