I take sleeping very seriously. So much so that I’ve incorporated lavender-scented candles, TikTok’s sleepy-girl mocktail, and stretching into my nighttime routine. But despite all the tips, tricks, and products I use to get a good night’s rest, sleeping comfortably is always more difficult in the summer. Hot summer nights in mid-July are just not what Lana Del Ray makes them out to be.
This July, I found myself tossing, turning, and staring at the ceiling fan in bed, waiting for temperatures to drop so I could get some shut eye. It doesn’t help that I always sleep with covers and a comforter over me, but it’s not a habit I’m willing to break. So when I was looking for new ways to beat the heat – besides a second fan and new set of cotton sheets – I thought it might be time to try a different mattress.
I was immediately drawn to the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite ($1,089, originally $1,989) because of the name, but was also intrigued by the product description on the brand’s site. In addition to having a cooling effect, the mattress promises to provide extra pressure relief and a unique floating sensation for “unparalleled restoring sleep.” With that in mind (and the hope that I could put this version of hot-girl summer to rest), I decided to test it out.

What I Like About the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite
I’m used to sleeping on rigid mattresses; so when I first sat on the Hybrid Cooling Elite and sank in a bit, I was worried it wouldn’t be firm enough. Despite my initial concerns, I found the mattress to be pretty supportive when it was time to catch some zzz’s.
As a side and stomach sleeper, I experience pressure on my hips when a bed is too firm and back pain when it’s too soft. Thanks to layers of memory foam that adapt to the body, HRX foam that prevents sinkage, and pocket springs that deliver good tension and bounce, the Emma mattress was a good balance of firmness and cloud-like comfort. My hips never once felt like they were digging into my bed, nor did my back feel misaligned. After a week of sleeping on the mattress, I’m happy to report that I didn’t experience any aches or pains in the morning.
In addition to being comfortable, the mattress lived up to its cooling-effect promise – which was my favorite thing about the Hybrid Cooling Elite. Let me set the scene: it’s the hottest night of the summer so far. It feels like record-breaking heat – an 80-degree evening in July – though I’m sure it’s been that hot in the past. I get into bed, put on my covers, and feel warm for a moment, but eventually get to sleep after reading and cooling down. End scene.
Despite the hotter climate, bedtime was actually a breeze with the Emma mattress. A layer of Thermosync foam that’s designed to regulate body temperature helped maintain coolness after a cold shower. The mattress also has an Airgocell foam layer that absorbs and releases excess body heat and moisture, making it breathable. Ultimately, I didn’t go to sleep or wake up feeling sweaty, or spend the evening tossing and turning – and that made all the difference in my sleep routine.
What to Consider Before Buying the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite
Overall, I liked the mattress, but there are a few things you should know before placing an order. I didn’t have any issues receiving the mattress, but it was dropped off on my doorstep in a box, so it was up to me to get it inside. If you’re not able to carry the 100-pound box, you may need to enlist friends or family to help you carry it (like I did). Once in my room though, unpacking and setting up the mattress was easy. Another thing to note – if you’d like to dispose of an old mattress to make room for a new one, Emma offers an old mattress removal option that will cost you $125.
Who the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Is Best For
The Hybrid Cooling Mattress is perfect for anyone who runs hot or has a hard time sleeping in warmer temperatures. I’d also recommend it to anyone who likes a mattress that is on the firm side, but still manages to feel plush. The mattress is adequate for any type of sleeper (back, side, or stomach).
Is the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite Worth the Splurge?
Coming in at $1,989 for a queen-size mattress, the Emma Hybrid Cooling Elite is considered a premium option compared to other models on the market. However, it’s not the most expensive and offers a lot of impressive features, from temperature control to seven ergonomic zones for comfort (no matter the position you sleep in). Ultimately, a mattress is an investment in your sleep for the next five to ten years – so a good mattress always seems like it’s worth the splurge to me. Plus, Emma also offers a 365-day trial period, 10-year warranty, free shipping and returns, so if it’s not a perfect fit you can always opt to send it back and try something new.
