Confession: I hate washing my hair. Everyone has different ideas on how often you should shampoo, but for me, twice a week is the most I can commit to. A shower that involves a full shampoo and condition routine takes up way too much time, not to mention the added minutes it takes to style my hair afterward. That’s why dry shampoo is usually a nonnegotiable for me, and fortunately for me (and you), I recently learned a new trick that’s completely changed the way I use the product for the better.

Sometimes, I apply dry shampoo immediately after washing and styling my hair as a preventative measure, but most often, I find myself using it in the morning after waking up to greasy roots. Still, oftentimes I find that no matter how I use it, it ends up leaving my hair feeling a little crunchy and gross – no matter how many brands I try. Because of this, I’ve been trying to skip the step as much as possible. I can usually go a full five to six days without needing to shampoo, but recently, my hair has been getting greasy just one or two days after a wash.

Thinking that it was time to add dry shampoo back into my routine, I decided to do some research to see if there were any good hacks on my favorite app for beauty tips and tricks: TikTok. I ended up coming across a video made by influencer Jaci Marie, where she showcased a hack involving spraying your hair with water after applying dry shampoo. Eager to test it out, I decided to try it that same night.

How to Do TikTok’s Dry-Shampoo and Water Hack

Before going to bed, I gathered my product of choice, the Unite Hair U:DRY Clear Dry Shampoo ($29), and a spray bottle filled with water. I started out by spraying the roots of my hair with the dry shampoo and then waiting about five minutes for the product to soak up the oil in my hair. Next, I massaged it into my scalp. Then, I tackled the weird part – misting my hair with water. I took a spray bottle and dampened the roots of my head and scalp. I tried to only mist the areas where I had applied dry shampoo, skipping out on the midlengths and ends. From there, I headed to bed.

When I woke up in the morning and went into the bathroom to see what my hair looked like, I was surprised to see that I had a lot more volume at the roots. Instead of it being essentially plastered to my head, everything felt fluffy and, dare I say, clean? Although I wouldn’t say the hack made my hair look like I had just hopped out of the shower and had a blowout, it was a vast improvement from what it usually looked like after days of not washing and only using dry shampoo.

I’ve tried this trick a few more times since the initial run, and I’ve found that it works no matter what brand of dry shampoo I’m using. It’s been a total game changer, and I’m back to going six days in between washes, so it’s a win in my book.
