Next to blush, lip products are my achilles heel. I have an unhealthy amount of lipsticks, glosses, and balms, and I legitimately still believe that it’s not enough. Each color and formula is as unique as the next, and I’ve learned how a brand tackles the category can say quite a bit about its mission and development.
For instance, Westman Atelier recently launched its Lip Suede Hydrating Matte Lipstick ($50). If you think this is just another lipstick launch, you’re wrong: it’s coming from the mind of Gucci Westman, the veteran makeup artist and arguably one of the pioneers of the “clean girl” aesthetic before it was popular.
It’s also the brand’s first foray into the category (only tinted lip balms were offered before). The matte lipstick is expected to be fully opaque and highly pigmented, which feels like a significant leap. Of course, the company also claims that it is comfortable on the lips, while delivering that signature Westman Atelier quality that the makeup artist’s products have become known for. Needless to say, I had to try it out for myself. Keep reading for my review of the formula.

What I Like About the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Matte Lipstick
As soon as I swiped on the lipstick, I was immediately impressed with the way it felt on my lips. I have used quite a few matte formulas that tug and skip when you apply. Not only did this one glide on like a satin or high-shine lipstick, but it also felt more comfortable the longer I wore it. Matte lipsticks are also notoriously drying, but that was not an issue with this product. In addition to the gorgeous packaging and shade that I chose (Pique, a taupe-y purple), I feel like I have a winner on my hands.
How to Use the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Matte Lipstick
As with any traditional lipstick in my collection, I applied the the color straight from the tube. I’m more of a swiper than a dabber, and this can sometimes cause my lipsticks to look a bit streaky and uneven. This one didn’t have that issue, likely because of how well the color matched my natural lip shade. Still, even when I look into a mirror after applying, all I see is a perfectly even hue, so I say this formula is a hit all around.
What to Consider About the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Matte Lipstick
While the formula is matte, it’s worth noting that it’s not completely budgeproof. After a few hours of wear (and a few sips of water later) I noticed a bit of feathering in the middle of my mouth. Still, it is really buildable, so I just swiped another layer and it was good as new.
