If you’ve dipped your toes into astrology, you may already be familiar with how your birth chart explains the different areas of your life. But while you likely already know the general personality traits of your zodiac sign, your unique cosmic profile goes deeper than that. In fact, your birth chart is also made up of a moon sign, rising sign, houses, planetary aspects, and more.

Knowing your moon sign, however, may be one of the more helpful parts to understanding yourself. What does your moon sign mean, though? Think about it as a deep look into your inner psyche. In general, a moon sign’s meaning gives you a glimpse into your celestial personality.

Because every individual has their own moon sign, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the zodiac moon signs in general – whether for yourself or to understand someone else better. Below, astrologer Tara Bennet explains the basic needs and motivations of your moon sign.

What Is a Moon Sign?

Simply put, your moon sign reflects your inner being. This area includes your intuition, emotional responses, and perception of yourself. This aspect of your personality isn’t always obvious or noticeable to others, unless they’ve spent a great deal of time with you. Think of your moon sign as the private part of yourself that you disclose only to those closest to you.

Your moon sign can also explain why you may not completely identify with every single one of the traits in your sun sign. If you feel like a different zodiac sign entirely, you may feel more aligned with your moon sign.

Aside from having deeper insight into your inner needs and emotions, your moon sign can help you find out whether or not you’re sexually compatible with someone. How you operate emotionally is fundamental for any relationship dynamic, whether it be romantic or platonic, so knowing the relationship between your moon sign and its traits can really help you understand the relationship between yourself and your emotions.

What Does Your Moon Sign Mean?

When it comes to your moods and emotional responses, your moon sign plays an integral part. In order to get the full scoop on your emotional needs, you should look into the traits your moon sign is stationed in. For example, if you have a sensitive type like Cancer, chances are you are very connected with your emotions and not afraid to express them. Alternatively, if your moon sign is in the freedom-loving Aquarius, you may feel differently about expressing your emotions since this sign gets a reputation for being aloof and emotionally detached. What Is My Moon Sign?

Your moon sign is determined by your birth date, time you were born, and location you were born. By placing this information into an online moon-sign calculator tool or an astrology app, you can learn this part of your birth chart. While your moon sign isn’t the most obvious sign in your chart, it is the most personal. You can learn a lot about yourself, your relationship with your emotions, and how your inner self meshes with others.

Zodiac Moon Signs

Once you discover what your moon sign is, below are some of the main characteristics to know about your specific zodiac moon sign, according to Bennet.

Aries Moon

An Aries moon loves to be adventurous, often times pushing the limit in all aspects of life.

Taurus Moon

“A Taurus moon has an underlying seductive vibe; lusty mixed with romance,” Bennet says. In other words, if you have a Taurus moon, you may be slow to open up and you may prefer to play the long game in relationships.

Gemini Moon

Gemini moons may struggle processing their own emotions, but they love a good heart-to-heart, Bennet says. “For them, applying logic to feelings simply doesn’t work.”

Cancer Moon

According to Bennet, Cancer moons “crave deep connections and thrive in a close-knit family setting.” They’re often perceived as being “more lovable” and having a softer side.

Leo Moon

“Leo moons have enormous hearts that brim with emotions, making them prone to dramatic outbursts,” Bennet says. They want to be chosen every time.

Virgo Moon

It’s all about the details with the Virgo moons, Bennet says. They see and value small touches, seeing everything but not giving away anything, she adds.

Libra Moon

“Libra moons are happiest when surrounded by perfection and with a well-balanced life,” Bennet says. The bad part: Libra moons can be incredibly judgmental.

Scorpio Moon

Scorpio moons take on an “all or nothing” approach to pretty much everything in life. “Scorpio moons are deep, brooding, and have an intensity that’s off the charts,” Bennet says.

Sagittarius Moon

A Sagittarius moon loves embracing new things and spontaneity, Bennet says. “They see emotional experiences as adventures, and they thirst for fresh sets of emotions.”

Capricorn Moon

Although Capricorn moons may appear “cold, unemotional, and uncaring,” they have “hidden rivers of emotions only shown to their most trusted,” Bennet says.

Aquarius Moon

Aquarius moons are known to be a bit quirky. “They watch and learn, rather than act and express,” Bennet says.

Pisces Moon

“Pisces moon often has a child-like naivety that makes them gullible,” Bennet says. “They’re dreamy, expressing themselves as if telling a story rather than putting facts in place.”
