A few factors play into creating a TikTok-famous beauty product. The results need to be wow-worthy, the application process needs to look simple-yet-enticing, and it needs to perform better than other products in its category. The Wonderskin Lip Stain ticks all the boxes — but do the results at home match what you see when you scroll through videos that have earned this lip product 300 million of views on the app? With a fresh restock over at Wonderskin.com and sweaty summer days on the horizon, WWD Shop editors put the Wonderskin Wonder Blading Lip Stain Masque to the test to find out.

Anyone on the beauty side of TikTok has likely come across Wonderskin’s Wonder Blading Lip Stain Masque, with creators swiping on what appears to be a shimmery indigo lipstick that peels away to reveal a gorgeous lip stain that doesn’t transfer when touched. Each of the 16 shades go on in an alarmingly blue tone, but in under a minute, you simply slough or peel away that blue film to reveal a natural or vibrant tint, depending on the shade and number of coats you applied.

With stark competition from big-name brands, Wonderskin’s lip stain has managed to rise to the top after nearly five years on the market — on Amazon, it’s the number one bestselling lip stain with over 5,500 five-star reviews. Many of the specific shades have become TikTok-famous in their own right: First, the burgundy red Divine shade, and now the soft rose tone Whimsical is taking off on the app with 8 million searches for the shade.

Two WWD Shop editors tested a slew of popular shades and with both the ‘Stain & Go’ and ‘Peel & Reveal’ techniques (more on those later). Ahead, our full Wonderskin review.

Wonderskin Lip Stain Review — Editor Testing Notes

Like many, my first introduction to Wonderskin’s Lip Stain was on TikTok many moons ago: There’s something about watching someone peel off dark, sparkly blue lipstick like a sheet mask to reveal a perfect pink lipstick color that stops your thumb you mid-scroll. After months of this lip tint living in my head rent-free, I decided it was time to put it to the test.

For starters, you don’t actually have to shed the pigment like a snake to try it out. Upon my first trial with the lip product, I followed Wonderskin’s lip stain instructions for the ‘Stain & Go’ technique, simply swiping the mask on bare lips, waiting about 20 seconds, then using a damp wash cloth to remove the blue pigment. Much to my surprise, this fast, easy process left me with a gorgeous swath of pink pigment (I first tested the shade Beautiful). I was concerned that it’d look messy when I slipped up and didn’t fully ‘color inside the lines’ of my lips with the first try, but that minor mess up didn’t result in a sloppy stain. That’s because these pigments come out soft and blurred, rather than starkly intense, for foolproof application. You can repeat this process as much as you’d like for more intensity, but I was pleased with the color payoff from my 20-second session.

The “Peel & Reveal” technique is what make Wonderskin’s lip stain go viral, so for the next trial, I followed a two-step routine, applying the lip mask then topping it off with the brand’s Wonder Blading Activator Mist that turns the blue pigment into a film you can peel off to reveal richer color payoff than the ‘Stain & Go’ method. With this technique, I found it more important to apply the lip stain with a steady hand, as it creates more intense color with sharper lines. Beyond the satisfaction of peeling off the pigment, the benefit here is a longer wear time — I got about two extra hours with this technique compared to the shortcut.

Wonderskin’s Wonder Blading Lip Stain Masque’s shades stayed put on my lips for double the time I’ve experienced from similar stains that fade almost instantly when eating, drinking, or swiping lip balm or lip gloss on top. And the shade range delivers so many options for lasting lip looks all year long.
