YSL Beauty pulled out all the stops Wednesday night in Paris’ La Caserne to celebrate the launch of the fragrance Myslf. The guest of honor there was actor Austin Butler, who fronts the scent.
“When we first started talking about the fragrance, I didn’t even know what it was called,” he said. “Then, when they told me [that], it sparked a lot of curiosity for me. I realized that this was going to a conversation starter — to be able to talk about what it means to be true to who you are.
“It’s a constant curiosity for me, because as an actor I’m constantly looking at the world through other people’s eyes, and realizing I’m a lot more similar to that person than I thought at face value,” Butler continued. “There are so many more facets of me that I didn’t even know exist. So it’s a constant curiosity and wonderment at the world and who I am, and the constant exploration and excavation of who I am.”
Myslf the scent, with its floral elements, patchouli, bergamot and woody components, reminds him of when he was a child.
“My mother wore very floral and vanilla scents, and my dad wore very peppery, woody scents,” said Butler. “As a kid I used to spray both of them on me and go to school. I’ve always liked the combination of things that may be conventionally masculine or feminine. The merging of the two has always been part of my taste.”
While in Paris, he adores walking for hours.
“I love going to places where there’s not as many tourists, finding little restaurants and bars that my Parisian friends love to go to,” said Butler. “But most of the time, it’s just trying to get lost in the streets.”
“Literally, this entire city for me is magic, magic, magic,” said Jordan Roth, theater producer, couture collector and chairman of Friends of the CFDA. Among his favorite districts is the seventh, and he has a penchant for gardens, such as the Tuileries and Palais-Royal. He had just visited the Musée Rodin’s.
Fragrance-wise, Roth likes “subtlety, individuality and personality.”
Recently minted Victoria’s Secret Angel Ceval Omar enjoys fragrance with “spicy notes, I love sweet notes and I love to round it out with green notes.”
Actress Adèle Exarchopoulos has a soft spot for the scent of food, when it sparks memories. She cited as an example lasagne, which her father cooks. Exarchopoulos also likes the familiar scent of family members’ skin.
She had just finished shooting a film directed by Gilles Lellouche, called “L’Amour ouf.” It’s a love story spanning 12 years.
“It was one of the best shoots of my life,” said Exarchopoulos, who explained everything — the script, character, people, atmosphere and how it was directed — was better than ever expected. “Now I’m not doing anything, because it’s hard after this. It is like a good relationship, after which you don’t want to get involved with [anyone].”
Musician Troye Sivan, who is YSL Beauty’s U.S. ambassador, has been busy, too. His third studio album, “Something to Give Each Other,” is due out on Oct. 13. Two singles from the album have already been released so far.
“I’m really over the moon with it. It’s the exact dream vision that I had before I started making it,” said Sivan. “Somehow we managed to make it real.”
He wanted it to “feel, free, hopeful, joyous, sexy and connected.”
