Last year, Asics simultaneously added two new models to the Blast line of running shoes through the Sonicblast and Megablast. The Sonicblast is the speediest of all the Blast shoes in part because of its Pebax plate, and that very element is getting a revision for the shoe’s second iteration.
The Asics Sonicblast 2 pares down its Astroplate into a fork shape, which both sheds weight and allows room for more FF Turbo Squared, the supercritical ATPU foam introduced on the first Sonicblast and Megablast. As Asics’ bounciest foam, FF Turbo is now employed through the forefoot trampoline pod that extends through the lower layer of softer FF Blast Max.
“What makes the Sonicblast franchise unique within the Blast family is its ability to deliver a highly energetic experience through a combination of cushioning and mechanical propulsion,” Paul Lang, Asics senior manager of global product, performance running footwear, said in a press release. “For the Sonicblast 2, we focused on refining that feeling rather than completely reinventing it. By rethinking the geometry of the Astroplate technology and how it interacts with the surrounding cushioning system, we were able to create a ride that feels lighter, smoother and more effortless.”
