The peekaboo bra trend is one thing, but the bra as a shirt? It might be more high fashion than it sounds.
Over the past few months, celebrities have been treating the bra less like something meant to peek out from beneath a look and more like the look itself — though plenty are still dabbling in the exposed bra trend. It seems that Fashion Month has only provided more chances to try out the risqué style, with bras turning up on red carpets, front rows and the spring 2027 runways in place of shirts altogether.
Rihanna offered the latest example Monday, arriving at the Matières Fécales spring 2027 show on the opening day of Paris Fashion Week in a bronzed, heavily textured skirt suit. Rather than putting much of anything beneath it, she wore the two-piece over a sheer black bra, finishing the look with curved-heel Christian Louboutin pumps.

It was not even Rihanna’s first visible-bra moment in Paris this month. Days earlier, she wore a sheer black Ferragamo georgette blouse over a black bra with a voluminous pleated brown skirt from Maximilian Davis’ fall 2026 collection.
Tyla took the trend to a more literal point at the MTV VMAs on Sunday. The “Water” singer wore a blue snakeskin-effect bra with an extremely low-slung pencil skirt, matching pumps and choker from Mowalola’s spring 2027 collection. Unlike a sheer dress or exposed lingerie layered beneath another garment, there was little ambiguity about what was functioning as Tyla’s top.
She was hardly alone at the VMAs. Charli XCX wore an abbreviated Saint Laurent top with a sheer panel, a design loosely based off the French luxury house’s fall 2017 ready-to-wear collection, per her stylist, Chris Horan.
JoJo Levesque — more commonly known mononymously as JoJo — “KPop Demon Hunters” star Rei Ami and “Summer House” star Ciara Miller also all arrived in variations on the bra-top formula.
Hannah Einbinder got to the bra-shirt idea early, just as New York Fashion Week’s spring 2027 presentations were wrapping up.
For the Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, the “Hacks” star wore a black satin Calvin Klein Collection bandeau with white trim and a long black column skirt from the Veronica Leoni-designed spring 2027 collection. Einbinder and stylist Karla Welch had seen the show during New York Fashion Week only days earlier; the runway look was then carried back to Los Angeles in time for the ceremony.
That bra-and-skirt pairing has since become one of the most persistent silhouettes of the spring season, and the lingerie-style tops have been making their way down various runways during Fashion Month.
At Prada in Milan, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons built the entire spring 2027 collection around skirts, then paired many of them with bras ranging from lace-trimmed balconettes to pared-back bralettes. The opening look offered the formula almost immediately: skirt, bra, no conventional shirt required.
Fendi followed with satin-and-lace bralettes, while Etro put small bra tops beneath skirt suits. Variations have also appeared at Diesel and MM6 Maison Margiela.
Jennifer Lopez anticipated Milan’s fixation before the shows were properly underway. Arriving in the city on Sept. 21, Lopez kept it a bit more in the office siren territory, wearing a white button-down open over a plunging black bralette with high-waisted black trousers and platform shoes. Prada sent its first bra-and-skirt look down the runway the following day.
And while timing may be concentrated around Fashion Month, the bra had already spent much of the summer working its way out from underneath clothes.
In July, Anya Taylor-Joy promoted “Lucky” in New York wearing the first look from Antonin Tron’s pre-spring 2027 Balmain collection: a textured fuchsia satin bra, tiny olive cardigan left open at the front and orange-and-yellow jacquard pencil skirt.
There have been plenty of other bra-as-a-shirt moments, from Kristen Stewart wearing a black triangle bra beneath Chanel tailoring to Kaia Gerber pairing a Gucci bralette with a sheer skirt.
What has changed over Fashion Month is the frequency — and how little effort anyone seems interested in making to disguise the underwear as anything else.
A corset can become a top. A bustier has long since done the same. Chances are the bra will return to its undergarment origins as the winter months get colder, but come spring 2027, if you’re feeling bold, it might be time to test out the bra-only style trend.
Ahead, see how stars are styling the sultry bra-as-a-top trend.
