Since then Mitchell had helmed the John Paul Mitchell Systems company alongside cofounder John Paul DeJoria.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of Angus Mitchell,” said DeJoria in an email to WWD. “Angus had a deep love of family, community and the beauty industry. Angus had a huge heart that impacted countless people who crossed his path; we are grateful for the time we got with him, though it ended far too soon. During this shocking and difficult time, we kindly request privacy as we navigate this profound loss.”
In 2009, Mitchell opened the 1,800-square-foot Angus M salon on Canon Drive in Beverly Hills, which closed its doors in 2012.
He told WWD at the time of its opening that he envisioned the salon as “the cool kid on the block,” aiming to counteract stuffy salons. He added: “It was very easy to assume that things were just given to you as the son of Paul Mitchell. I have been doing hair for 18 years now, and it didn’t come naturally to me. I have to work hard to be who I am now….For me, to be behind the chair is a love affair, too.”
Mitchell is survived by his son, Dylan Mitchell, and his wife, Mara Mitchell.
