At 85, Martha Stewart is a certified style icon who isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.
On top of being a renowned culinary connoisseur, Stewart is also a beauty founder, author, podcast host, and to many, a life coach, educating her audience on the daily habits and wellness laws she’s followed for years, some a bit stranger than others. Ahead, WWD breaks down five of her most popular — albeit peculiar — tips and tricks, including pre-workout rinses, puzzles and pickled herring.
A green juice a day keeps the bad vibes away
Stewart has regularly spoken about her love of green juice, and drinking a fresh-pressed, 8-ounce glass in the morning to kick-start her day. Designed to support hydration, deliver antioxidants and aid digestion, Stewart’s go-to is a simple, six-ingredient blend, comprised of pear, orange, cucumber, celery stalk, flat-leaf parsley and ginger.

Shower before the gym
While many resident gym members and fitness junkies typically take a shower after an exercise class or sweat-filled strength training session, Stewart has admitted she prefers to start fresh, meaning she rinses before the workout. In fact, she likes to take a shower anytime she’s about to leave the house.
Weekly horseback rides
At one point in her life, if she wasn’t at the gym, in the garden or at the Pilates studio, you might have found Stewart horseback riding on one of her Friesians. Horseback riding was a recreational activity as much as it was a weekly nonnegotiable in her exercise plan. On top of being a core strengthener, riding can help improve posture and mood, helping to reduce physical and mental symptoms of stress.
Pickled herring before bed
When mega-influencer Nara Smith has a late-night food hankering, she’ll often whip up a sweet and semi-savory snack in the form of matcha chocolate-covered cherries or vanilla ice cream with olive oil drizzle and sea salt. Stewart, on the other hand, has admitted to having a penchant for pickled herring. Her reason for choosing the fish over a sugary fix? Because it’s good, and it’s part of her Polish roots. Most pickled herring is usually prepared by curing the fish and marinating it in vinegar, though Stewart hasn’t detailed her process in a few years.
4 a.m. crossword puzzle
Maybe it’s the pickled herring before bed, or maybe it’s just her mental motivation, but Stewart, without fail, starts her day at 4 a.m. every morning. And she doesn’t immediately start scrolling social media. Instead, the wellness mogul will read the news, do a crossword puzzle and play Letter Boxed on The New York Times. Why? To wake her brain.
