Oprah Winfrey and Vice President Kamala Harris showed they mean business during the “Unite for America” livestream rally on Thursday. The vice president and longtime talk show host and former journalist held the event in Farmington Hills, Mich., and discussed the forthcoming presidential election.
For the livestream rally, both Harris and Winfrey opted for power suiting moments onstage. Winfrey kept her look wholly monochrome, wearing a subdued orange suit from Oscar de la Renta’s fall 2019 ready-to-wear collection complete with double-breasted blazer, tailored, straight-leg trousers and a flowing blouse with a scarf-like, fabric draping element.
In a review of the fall 2019 collection, WWD’s Bridget Foley said Oscar de la Renta’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia “relaxed the house aesthetic” with a line inspired by southern Spain. “One sensed Kim and Garcia allowing themselves to be more themselves than they have in the past, relaxing the house aesthetic while remaining respectful to the founder’s vision and purpose. Oscar often said his only goal was to make women look beautiful. He did so with a polished approach that came through in his love of color, often drawing on his Latin heritage.”

Winfrey kept her accessories and glam simple. She wore her hair in loose, large curls and her makeup featured a clean look with a hint of rosy cheeks. Harris, who joined Winfrey onstage following introductions during the livestream event, opted for a different take on the power suit.
The Democratic Party’s nominee for president of the U.S. wore a purple suit. The look included tailored trousers and a single-breasted blazer. Along with the suited look, she wore a black blouse with a subtle pinstripe design and a lavallière, or pussy bow, detailing. She accessorized with her signature pair of pearl earrings.
During the livestream rally, Harris spoke to the significance of the presidential election this November. “I have to tell you, there’s so much I love about our campaign,” Harris said. “It really is about the people. And I look around at these screens, Oprah, I look at who’s in the room and this is America,” Harris said.
“I was saying with a group of friends earlier, I think in this moment where we’ve dealt with so much that I think is quite exhausting around powerful forces that would try and divide us and try to have us, as Americans, pointing fingers at each other,” she said.
“This movement, that is about reminding each other that we have so much more in common than what separates us is so critically important. This is about the strength of who we are as Americans.”
Harris favors power suiting moments as a major fashion statement throughout her presidential campaign. During the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, Harris wore two bespoke suits courtesy of French fashion label Chloé. Harris has also continued to accessorize her suits with pearls, often by Irene Neuwirth, as a sartorial homage to her collegiate sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
