I’ve been running consistently for over a decade, which means I’ve developed some firm opinions about the gear I use. From fitness trackers and sports bras to my go-to leggings, I have thoughts – and I’m not shy about sharing them. Did I finally join Strava? Yes. Do I think it lives up to the hype? Meh, jury’s still out. As for the It brands, I’m selective. Some I love, others I find overrated. (Alo, I’m talking to you.) I’ll be honest: most viral products don’t impress me. But when one does, I’ll gladly give it credit.

Lately, one piece has been dominating my TikTok FYP: Lululemon’s Fast and Free High-Rise Classic-Fit Split Short 3″ ($78). It’s a lightweight, airy running short with a built-in liner, an adjustable drawstring, and – most impressively – three discreet waistband pockets. I decided to put them to the test during a brutal Boston heat wave (hello, 90 degrees), and I wasn’t the only one. On my run, it was clear: everyone’s wearing them.

What I Like About Lululemon’s Fast and Free High-Rise Split Shorts

These shorts were released in February of this year with mixed reviews from both TikTokers and the running community, so I knew I had to see what they were all about. I won’t lie, I was hesitant. I typically run in bike shorts, which hug the thighs (a fit I actually prefer), but to my surprise, this looser style worked well for me. Honestly, they’re so lightweight I could’ve sworn I was running in swim bottoms. It took a little getting used to, but I wasn’t worried. The shorts almost function like curtains – offering just enough coverage to feel appropriate in public, with the occasional dramatic swoop in a gust of wind. That never bothered me; I knew the inner liner would keep me secure. And sure enough, it did.

The adjustable drawstring and high waist held them up beautifully – no annoying slipping or shifting. While I didn’t end up using the waistband pockets, I appreciated having the option. What I loved most, though, was that I never felt bogged down by sweat-soaked fabric. The lightness was freeing, as if I’d barely run a few miles, even when I was seven miles in.

What to Consider Before Buying Lululemon’s Fast and Free High-Rise Split Shorts

My biggest issue with these shorts, and the reason I typically avoid styles like this, is chafing. Was I fine after a few miles? Absolutely. In fact, I’ve never felt lighter. But by mile six, my thighs were definitely feeling it. To be fair, I can’t entirely blame the shorts. It’s more of a personal style preference. Still, if you’re prone to chafing during runs (like me), these likely won’t offer much protection.

That said, you pick your battles. The benefits are strong enough that I’ll keep them in rotation, just for shorter runs or hot-weather walks. If you prefer a biker-style short like I do, Lululemon also makes the Fast and Free High-Rise 6″ Short ($74), which features five pockets and the same lightweight, quick-drying feel. But overall, the split shorts deliver on breathability, comfort, and performance, with just a few trade-offs. If you’re not prone to thigh rub, they might become your new favorite pair. If you are, they’re still worth trying – just maybe not on your longest run.

Who Are Lululemon’s Fast and Free High-Rise Split Shorts Best For?

The Fast and Free High-Rise Classic-Fit Split Short 3″ is best for runners who want to feel like they’re wearing almost nothing (in the best way). They’re breezy, super lightweight, and great for short runs or hot days when snug fabric sounds like a nightmare.
