Bob haircuts in every form have seen a major resurgence in the last year. It started with Hailey Bieber’s major chop in January 2023 and only snowballed from there. But one type of bob, in particular, has come out on top: the blunt bob haircut.

Categorized by its so-blunt-they-might-cut-you ends, a blunt bob is typical all one length with an edgy yet sophisticated feel. It looks good on everyone, which is why a range of stars have worn it over the years, including Lupita Nyong’o, Lucy Hale, Lori Harvey, and sisters Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé Kardashian, to name a few.

Ahead, a hairstylist is sharing more about this timeless look, including his tips for styling it at home.

What Is a Blunt Bob?

There are a myriad of different types of bobs out there. You have inverted bobs, microbobs, and even newer trendy styles like the French bob and Italian bob, but this straight-edge style is tried and true. “A blunt bob is a shoulder or chin-length cut,” Sally Hershberger NoMad senior stylist Jacob Schmidt tells POPSUGAR. “It can be easily styled by blowing it out, adding a soft wave, or wearing it naturally curly depending on hair texture.”

The haircut works on all hair types “as it can be worn bouncy and curly, smooth and sleek, or soft and tousled,” but it’s particularly great for anyone seeking more body. “It is great for thin or fine hair as it creates the illusion of volume,” says Schmidt.

How to Style a Blunt Bob Haircut

A blunt bob is a wash-and-go type of haircut for many, which is part of its magic. Depending on whether your hair is naturally straight, wavy, or curly, you have different options. If you want to air dry, Schmidt says to use a curl-enhancing cream or volumizing mousse and dry as normal. To wear the look curled, “Defuse or blow out and add a soft curl by wrapping [the] hair with a one-inch curling iron or flat iron in the direction away from the face.”
