A Tall Box is bringing jeans designed for tall women to the premium market.
The direct-to-consumer brand, founded by Anastasia de Jong, aims to fill a long-standing gap that many standard size brands have tried to fill but failed: premium denim with true tall proportions and body-shape-conscious fit options designed specifically for tall women.
“The average woman in the U.S. is five-foot-four. My understanding is when a brand offers tall, it works for a woman who’s a little taller than that. She might be five-foot-six or five-foot-seven. Once you hit that five-foot-nine range, which what is classified as tall for most mass market brands, it doesn’t cut it for us,” de Jong told SJ Denim. “The inseams aren’t long enough, and it’s not enough to just add length to the bottom of a jean. The rest of the proportions need to be adjusted. Our rise is much higher, our hips sit higher, our knees hit in different places, and we need different inseam options. So tall isn’t a one size fit all.”
As a five-foot-eleven woman, the entrepreneur speaks from personal experience. “As a tall woman, I spent most of my life feeling like there was something wrong with my body because clothes were never made for my height and shape,” de Jong said. “Then I started working in fashion retail and saw tall women come in with the same frustrations.”
Some retailers sold tall sizes only online. Others didn’t serve curvy or plus size. And then there were the tall jeans that were still too short for most tall consumers. That one-on-one experience, combined with her corporate background as a Walmart buyer and sales leader, revealed to de Jong an underserved market.
“Once I went to corporate, I was able to then quantify and understand data and see market gaps. That’s when I saw the gap was bigger than I had imagined,” she said.
In 2023, de Jong took the entrepreneurial leap and founded A Tall Box. She began working with a local designer to develop and test prototypes. Together, they evaluated tall jeans that were already in the market—what made them work and what didn’t. They also considered how to translate tall patterns for curvy body shapes to eliminate waist gaps.
“A Tall Box was created so tall women can finally feel seen, empowered, and confident in denim made specifically for their height, proportions and shape,” de Jong said.
The result is a collection of three fits, each available in true 35-inch and 37-inch inseams and waste sizes 24-38. The Classic Slim has a straight leg with a refined, elongated fit. The Girlfriend has a relaxed hip and a tapered leg. The Curvy Slim has a contoured fit through the hip and thigh and is positioned for pear and hourglass body shapes.
Including a fit for pear-shaped women was especially important for de Jong. “It’s not enough to design jeans just around a rectangle or oval body shape. There is a whole customer demographic that’s left out when that’s the only shapes that’s taken into consideration,” she said.
A Tall Box works with mills and factories in Pakistan. De Jong said special care was given to select fabrics that have superior stretch and recovery and a high cotton content. The 13-ounce fabrics are made with 93 percent cotton, 5 percent Lycra T-400 and 2 percent spandex. Priced at $200, de Jong said she believes women want to invest in premium denim. “They just need a brand to show up for them.”
While de Jong sees opportunities to expand into other categories, denim provides A Tall Box a long runway for growth. he brand is already planning additional fits and washes, but de Jong also wants to hear directly from customers about what they want next.
The jeans are available preorder beginning in August and will officially launch in September. For the launch, the brand is working with a network of tall influencers to drive awareness and build connections with consumers. “We have to put in the work,” she said. “I’m really hyper focused on [the consumer] experience and making sure she recognizes us and can trust us.”
